I went with a mentee story because I figured it'd be easier to show growth from my side.
Choose a concrete mentoring story where you can clearly show both the mentee's growth and your own learning. Structure it using a narrative arc that covers context, goals, actions, challenges, and outcomes for both parties, then reflect on how it shaped your approach to guidance. Keep it concise and focus on the interpersonal dynamics and adaptability.
Pro tip: Emphasize how you tailored your guidance to the mentee's needs and how you adapted when challenges arose—this shows maturity and cross-functional empathy. Also, quantify impact where possible (e.g., 'they shipped their first feature within a month') to make the story tangible.
Briefly describe the mentoring relationship: who was involved, the setting (e.g., onboarding, pair programming, cross-team project), and why mentoring was needed.
State the specific goals you and the mentee agreed upon, such as ramping up on a codebase, improving code review skills, or preparing for a promotion.
Explain the concrete steps you took: regular 1:1s, pair programming, code reviews, shadowing, or creating learning resources. Highlight how you adapted your style to the mentee's learning preferences.
Discuss obstacles that arose—e.g., time zone differences, conflicting priorities, skill gaps, or communication breakdowns—and how you navigated them together.
Summarize the results for both parties: what the mentee achieved, what you gained (e.g., leadership skills, fresh perspectives), and the key lesson you learned about giving or receiving guidance.
