I had a decent story for this but stumbled on the 'early' part.
Use the STAR method to narrate a specific incident where you recognized a gap in your knowledge or a potential risk, and proactively sought help from a senior engineer or another team. Emphasize how your early action prevented a serious outage, and highlight the positive outcome and lessons learned.
Pro tip: Show that asking for help is a sign of maturity and risk awareness, not weakness. Quantify the impact if possible (e.g., 'prevented a potential 4-hour outage affecting 10,000 customers').
Briefly describe the project, your role, and the situation that required proactive help. Mention the potential severity if the issue wasn't addressed.
Explain how you recognized early that you needed assistance—e.g., unfamiliarity with a system, a subtle bug, or a dependency risk—and why waiting could lead to an incident.
Describe how you proactively reached out to the right person or team, what you communicated, and how you collaborated to resolve the issue.
State the positive result: the incident was prevented, and mention any measurable impact (e.g., avoided downtime, saved costs, maintained customer trust).
Summarize what you learned and how it improved your approach to similar situations, showing growth and adaptability.
