Airtable·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral round at Airtable for a software engineer role, just the one question about inclusivity. Pretty standard DEI-flavored behavioral but it still tripped me up a bit trying to find a story that felt genuine and not performative.
  • Tell me about a specific time you actively promoted inclusivity on your team or in your organization. Walk through the context, what you did, and what came out of it.

“I blanked for a second because every story I had felt either too small or too rehearsed.”

Airtable·Product Manager·Hiring Manager Screen

May 2026
Interviewed for a PM role at Airtable and got a product communication question that felt deceptively simple at first.
  • How would you explain web cookies to a non-technical person?

“I went with an analogy about a coffee shop remembering your usual order, which felt clever in the moment but I think I over-explained the technical bits anyway.”

Airtable·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Airtable software engineer interview with a coding round focused on object-oriented design and resource lifecycle management. The problem looked deceptively simple at first glance but had a lot of edge cases hiding in the requirements.
  • Design and implement a connection pool in Python. You're given a DBConnection class you cannot modify (with initialize, query, and close methods) and need to implement ConnectionPool and PoolConnection with correct lifecycle management, reuse of idle connections, and error handling for things like double-close and querying after close.

“The skeleton made it look like a straightforward wrapper exercise but the real work was in the ownership semantics.”

Airtable·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Airtable technical phone screen that was basically one meaty coding problem the whole time. The question sounds manageable until you get to circular references and then suddenly you're drawing arrows on a whiteboard in your head trying not to break everything.
  • Implement serialize and deserialize functions for a Python object graph containing strings, integers, and dicts, including possible circular references. Use BFS to produce a flat structure with a root ID and a value map, where dicts store mappings to child IDs and primitives store raw values. Shared subobjects should reuse the same ID. Also discuss correctness, traversal determinism, and time/space complexity.

“I got the basic BFS structure down pretty fast, tracking visited objects by their id() so shared references would reuse the same key.”

Got an OOD problem at Airtable for a software engineer role. One question, pretty focused on connection pool design. Not a ton of ambiguity in the prompt but the implementation details kept me on my toes.
  • Given a DBConnection class (with initialize, query, and close methods that you cannot modify), implement a PoolConnection class and a ConnectionPool class. ConnectionPool should be initialized with a max connection count, return a PoolConnection via get_connection(), and return None if the active connection count exceeds the max. PoolConnection.query() should delegate to the underlying DBConnection, and PoolConnection.close() should return the connection back to the pool for reuse rather than destroying it.

“The part that tripped me up was close().”

Airtable·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Airtable system design round focused entirely on building a search system. The split between algorithmic depth and distributed systems was real and they pushed hard on both halves.
  • Design a search system, covering both the algorithmic side (inverted index, query parsing, ranking, relevance scoring) and the systems side (sharding, replication, query fan-out, result merging, hot shard handling, indexing pipeline).

“They were explicit upfront that they wanted roughly equal time on each half, which I appreciated but also found stressful because I kept wanting to stay in the systems weeds.”

Airtable·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Airtable system design round for a software engineer role, focused entirely on one big open-ended problem: build an ML-powered natural-language-to-formula assistant on top of their own product. The question had a lot of surface area and I felt like I was triaging which parts to go deep on the whole time.
  • Design an ML-powered assistant for a no-code table product like Airtable that takes a user's natural-language request and converts it into a formula expression grounded in the live table's schema. You have access to an Airtable API key and an LLM API key. Walk through the end-to-end architecture, formula generation strategy, output contract, schema grounding, ambiguity handling, validation, how you apply changes to the live sheet, safety concerns, latency/reliability, evaluation, and edge cases.

“This is basically a full system design in one prompt.”

Airtable system design round for a software engineer role. The question was a deep dive into JSON serialization with circular references, which sounds manageable until you realize they want you to cover basically every edge case imaginable in one go.
  • Design a JSON serialization and deserialization strategy that handles circular references between objects. Cover cycle detection, stable object identifiers, preventing infinite recursion, preserving shared subobjects, traversal order choices, determinism, support for primitives and dicts, input validation and security, and cross-language compatibility. Also analyze time and space complexity and compare alternative approaches like reference tables or anchor/alias schemes.

“This question is basically five questions welded together.”

Airtable·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jul 2026
Behavioral round at Airtable for a software engineering role, one question focused entirely on inclusive culture. Pretty standard format but the specificity of what they wanted made it trickier than expected.
  • Tell me about a concrete action you personally took to make your team or workplace more inclusive. Walk through the context, what you did specifically, and what came of it.

“I had a story ready but I fumbled the 'measurable outcome' part.”

Airtable·Data Scientist·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jul 2026
Behavioral round for a Data Scientist role at Airtable. Two questions, both pretty standard but they wanted real structure around scope and measurable impact, which tripped me up a bit.
  • Tell me about a time you had to work through a problem where the goals kept shifting or the data was incomplete. What did you actually do?
  • Describe a situation where you pushed back on a product manager or stakeholder. How did it play out?

“I had a decent story for this but fumbled the impact part.”
