Amazon·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Oct 2026
Went through a first-round technical screen for an SDE-1 role at Amazon. Two coding problems plus a couple of behavioral questions. Came out of it not totally sure how I did, mostly because I took longer than I'd have liked on both coding problems.
  • Given a 2D grid, count the number of distinct islands (connected components of land cells).
  • Solve a problem that requires combining binary search with a greedy strategy.
  • Walk me through your background and what you've been working on.
  • Behavioral questions tied to Amazon's leadership principles.

“Classic graph traversal problem and I knew it, but I still took a minute to settle on BFS vs DFS.”
