FAANG / Big Tech

Most of these Apple write-ups come from Software Engineers (212), then Machine Learning Engineers (85) and Data Scientists (32). The most reported rounds are the technical phone screen (217), the system design round (48), the product sense round (29) and the behavioral / leadership round (22).

Apple·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jul 2026
Apple SWE interview that went deep on TCP socket handling, which I was not expecting to be the whole focus. One question, two variants, unit tests, and complexity analysis all in one session. It was a lot.
  • Design and implement a buffered TCP socket reader that handles two message framing strategies: (A) a 4-byte big-endian length prefix where readMessage() returns exactly one complete message per call, and (B) newline-delimited messages via readLine(). The implementation must handle partial reads, back-to-back messages, and EOF correctly across calls, and you need to provide unit tests and a complexity analysis.

“This wrecked me more than I expected.”

Apple SWE interview with an object-oriented design question centered on a deck of cards. More depth required than I expected, especially around probability correctness and the shuffle algorithm.
  • Design an in-memory model of a standard 52-card deck that supports shuffle() and draw() operations, where shuffle() produces an unbiased ordering and draw() returns each remaining card with equal probability.
  • What clarifying questions would you ask before starting the design, and how would the answers change your implementation?
  • How would you unit test that your shuffle is actually unbiased, given that the output is random?
  • How would you extend this design to support a multi-deck shoe and a discard pile, with a reshuffle that folds discards back in?
  • If two threads draw from the same deck concurrently, how do you ensure no card is dealt twice and the draw remains uniform?

“I jumped straight into defining a Card class and felt pretty good about that part.”

Apple software engineer interview with a deep dive into debugging experience. Single behavioral/technical question but it went pretty far into the weeds on process, tooling, and follow-up prevention.
  • Walk me through the most impactful bug you've dealt with on a real project. What was the system, how did you find it, what caused it, and what did you do so it wouldn't happen again?

“This one sprawled.”

Apple·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Jul 2026
Apple software engineer coding round with four problems spanning trees, date manipulation, signal processing, and sorting. Nothing too exotic but the palindrome date one took me longer than I'd like to admit.
  • Given the root of a binary tree, return the values of all leaf nodes in left-to-right order.
  • Given a date in YYYY-MM-DD format, find the most recent earlier date whose YYYYMMDD string representation is a palindrome. Describe the algorithm precisely, including leap year handling.
  • Implement a rising-edge detector: given an array of 0/1 samples, output an array where index i is 1 only if the previous sample was 0 and the current sample is 1. The first output is always 0.
  • Implement a sorting function for an array of integers. Any correct O(n log n) sort is acceptable; if you use bubble sort, state its complexity.

“Pretty standard.”

Apple SWE interview, one round that was basically a deep dive into a recent project. Pretty conversational but they pushed hard on specifics once you gave them an opening.
  • Walk me through a recent project: what problem it solved, what the scope looked like in terms of goals, timeline, team, and stakeholders, what your personal contributions were, how you measured success, and what trade-offs or challenges came up along the way.

“This is the kind of question that sounds easy until you're actually in it.”

Apple·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jul 2026
Apple system design round for a software engineering role. The whole thing was basically one giant API design question that kept branching into new territory every time I thought I'd covered it.
  • Design a REST API endpoint that creates a resource. Walk through the request and response schema, validation rules, and which HTTP status codes you'd return.
  • How would you implement idempotency using an Idempotency-Key header, and how do you safely handle duplicate requests?
  • How would you handle error handling, logging, and input sanitization in this API?
  • How would you approach authentication and authorization, and what rate limiting strategy would you use?
  • How would you write unit and integration tests for this API?
  • Describe the data model for this resource and how you'd handle concurrent requests to avoid race conditions.

“Started with the happy path and worked backwards, which felt backwards in retrospect.”

Apple data scientist technical screen, one question, all SQL. They handed me a sessionization problem with a strict set of requirements and just watched me work through it.
  • Write a single ANSI-SQL query that assigns per-user session IDs when the gap between consecutive events exceeds 30 minutes, then computes session_start, session_end, event_count, session_length_seconds, and next_session_gap_seconds using window functions including LEAD.

“This is the kind of question that looks manageable until you're actually writing it live.”

System design heavy session at Apple covering two pretty meaty problems back to back. The Yelp clone alone could've eaten the whole hour, so splitting time between that and URL shortening felt rushed toward the end.
  • Design a Yelp-like local business review platform. Walk through the core data model, how you'd handle reads and writes at scale, and how you'd approach geospatial search.
  • How would you scale reads and writes separately for a platform like this, covering things like replication, CDN usage, sharding strategy, and queue-based write paths?
  • Design a URL shortening service. Cover key generation, collision handling, storage, redirect flow, rate limiting, analytics, TTL and deletion, and custom aliases.

“This one took most of my prep energy and I still ran out of things to say mid-way through the scaling section.”

Apple ML engineer screen, four questions all in the fundamentals-of-large-models territory. Nothing tricky or weird, but the inference optimization question had more depth to it than I expected going in.
  • What is a vision encoder and what role does it play in a computer vision or multimodal model?
  • How is a vision encoder typically trained?
  • What are the main performance bottlenecks of large language models during inference?
  • How would you optimize LLM inference for memory usage and latency?

“Pretty foundational, I talked through how it maps raw pixel data into a dense embedding space that downstream components can actually reason over.”

Apple DS interview with a product analytics case around a checkout conversion drop. The question was meaty and covered a lot of ground, felt like they wanted to see if you'd actually think through the noise vs. signal problem before jumping to conclusions.
  • A new feature was released and checkout conversion appears to have dropped. How would you determine whether this is a genuine regression or just random noise? Walk through the metrics, segmentation approaches, and any experimental or quasi-experimental methods you'd apply.

“I started with the time-series angle, basically asking whether the drop is outside normal variance before doing anything else.”
