ByteDance·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Aug 2026
First round for an AI Infra Intern role at ByteDance. Expected a resume chat plus live coding but the whole thing was just resume questions and some hypothetical GPU cluster debugging scenarios, no leetcode at all. Still not sure if that means I passed or they gave up on me early.
  • How would you approach debugging performance issues in a GPU cluster?

“This was the bulk of the interview and I was not ready for it.”

ByteDance·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jul 2026
Bytedance SWE interview with a string manipulation problem that had a sneaky follow-up. The core question was straightforward enough but the space-preservation variant tripped me up a bit.
  • Write a C++ function to reverse the order of words in a string, returning the result with no leading/trailing spaces and exactly one space between words.
  • Follow-up: modify the solution so that the original spacing pattern is preserved exactly. Leading spaces, gaps between word positions, and trailing spaces should all stay the same length; only the word tokens themselves should be reversed.
  • Write several edge-case test cases for your solution.
  • What is the time and space complexity of your approach, and how would you optimize it?

“Pretty standard once you get past the parsing.”

ByteDance·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jul 2026
Bytedance PM interview that went deep on platform thinking. The whole session was essentially one extended case on TikTok as an ecosystem, with follow-ups that kept peeling back layers I hadn't fully thought through.
  • Evaluate TikTok as a multi-sided platform ecosystem. Map the flywheel across viewers, creators, advertisers, and merchants, identify the biggest strengths and weaknesses, and recommend strategic priorities for the next 12 months.
  • Which stakeholder group would you prioritize first, and why?
  • How would you know if improvements to creator monetization are actually making the ecosystem healthier overall?
  • What guardrails would you put around expanding TikTok's commerce features?
  • If engagement metrics are rising but user trust scores are falling, how do you respond?

“This is a beast of a question.”

ByteDance·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jul 2026
System design round at Bytedance focused entirely on database reliability for a production platform serving multiple services. Pretty intense scope for a single question.
  • You own a production database platform used by several different services. How do you define and demonstrate that the system is stable? Walk through the metrics you'd track, how you'd handle incidents, capacity planning, data safety, and how you'd validate stability over time.

“This question is basically five questions stitched together and the interviewer just...”

ByteDance·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Jul 2026
Bytedance data scientist interview that leaned heavily on stats fundamentals. The whole session felt like a hypothesis testing deep dive, which I wasn't fully expecting going in.
  • Define Type I and Type II errors in the context of binary classification and hypothesis testing.
  • How do Type I and Type II errors map onto false positives, false negatives, precision, and recall?
  • When is a Type I error more costly than a Type II error, and when is the reverse true? Give concrete examples.
  • Given a specific scenario like fraud detection or medical screening, identify which error type corresponds to which mistake.

“Started fine, rattled off the textbook definitions.”

ByteDance·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Jul 2026
Bytedance SWE coding round, two problems back to back. Both were algorithmic, one binary search and one string multiplication. Felt okay on the first, got a bit tangled explaining complexity on the second.
  • Given an array of piles and a maximum number of hours, find the minimum processing speed k such that all piles can be finished within the time limit. Each hour you can process at most k items from one pile.
  • Multiply two large non-negative integers represented as strings without converting the full strings to built-in numeric types. Return the result as a string.

“I knew this was binary search pretty quickly, the monotonic property is obvious once you think about it.”

ByteDance·Product Manager·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jul 2026
Behavioral prep material for a Bytedance Ads PM role, covering background walkthrough and a classic 'three skills of a PM' prompt. More of a structured prep guide than a raw interview recap, but the questions themselves are real enough.
  • Walk me through your background and why it's relevant to an Ads PM role.
  • What are the three most important skills a Product Manager should have, and why?

“The tricky part here isn't the facts, it's the throughline.”

ByteDance·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jul 2026
Bytedance PM product case round, full structured case on improving hotel check-in and check-out. The prompt was open-ended enough that I kept second-guessing whether I was narrowing down too fast or not fast enough.
  • You're the PM for a hotel experience product. How would you improve the check-in and check-out process for both guests and hotel staff?
  • Which user segment would you explicitly not build for first, and why?
  • What is the riskiest assumption in your proposed solution, and how would you test it without a full build?
  • How would your approach change if the business goal shifted from guest acquisition to guest retention?
  • What guardrail metric would make you stop or roll back the launch?
  • What would you build in version two if the MVP performed well?

“The scope of this thing is deceptively wide.”

ByteDance·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jul 2026
Bytedance SWE interview with a numerical methods problem that sounds easy until you actually think about the precision requirement. Pretty standard technical phone screen vibe, just one meaty coding question.
  • Given a non-negative integer val and a non-negative integer precise, compute the square root of val without using any built-in square root function. The result should have an absolute error of at most 10^-precise. Walk through the time complexity of your approach.

“Binary search on a float range was the move, but I kept second-guessing my termination condition.”

ByteDance·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jul 2026
Bytedance PM interview focused entirely on TikTok's content ecosystem: ad experience, moderation pipelines, and AI evaluation. Four meaty strategy questions back to back, no behavioral stuff at all, which I wasn't expecting.
  • How would you compare TikTok's content ecosystem to a competitor's, covering things like supply, demand, monetization, creator incentives, and trust?
  • What changes would you make to TikTok's recommended ads so they feel less intrusive and overly commercial to users?
  • Walk me through how you'd improve the efficiency of TikTok's content moderation pipeline from upload through to appeals.
  • How would you actually measure whether AI is making content moderation better or worse?

“I went with YouTube as the comparison and it worked okay, but I spent too long on discovery mechanics and barely touched governance or creator incentive structures.”
