CoreWeave·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
System design round at CoreWeave for an observability engineering role. The whole thing was essentially one big question about building a metrics platform from scratch, and they went pretty deep on every layer of the stack.
  • Design a large-scale metrics collection system that supports counters, gauges, histograms, and summaries, with tagging, aggregation across tag dimensions, dashboards, and alerting.
  • What storage engine would you choose for this system and why? How would you handle down-sampling and tiered retention?
  • How would you handle high cardinality metrics and back-pressure in the ingestion pipeline?
  • How would you make this system multi-tenant, and what does reliability and replication look like for the system itself?

“I started with the ingestion side because that felt safest, walked through agent to collector to queue to storage.”

CoreWeave·Software Engineer·Take-home Assignment

Apr 2026
CoreWeave take-home that was basically a mini data pipeline project. More engineering than I expected for the role, and the checksum requirement at the end was a detail I almost missed.
  • Implement an OAuth flow to obtain an access token programmatically.
  • Use the access token to authenticate against a legacy database API and retrieve data.
  • Apply transformation rules to the fetched data, including filtering, mapping, and aggregation.
  • Send the transformed data to a new API endpoint.
  • Calculate and attach a checksum of the data payload before sending it, to verify data integrity.

“I've done OAuth before but always with a library doing the heavy lifting.”

CoreWeave·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
System design round for a Production Engineer role at CoreWeave. Just one question but it had a lot of surface area and I felt like I only scratched half of it before time ran out.
  • Design a system that can batch reboot N machines.

“Went in thinking this was straightforward and kind of embarrassed myself by jumping to a naive sequential approach first.”

CoreWeave·Software Engineer·Take-home Assignment

Apr 2026
Coreweave gave me a take-home for a Software Engineer role and it was way more involved than I expected. Basically a full mini-project: OAuth, pagination, data transformation, checksums, retry logic, idempotency. Took me a solid weekend.
  • Build a command-line tool that migrates records from a legacy HTTP API to a new one, including OAuth authentication, pagination, data transformation, checksum generation, retry logic, and idempotency.
  • How would you handle token expiry and re-acquisition during a long-running migration job?
  • Describe your idempotency strategy so the migration can be safely restarted without duplicating writes.
  • How do you compute and attach the checksum, and what considerations matter if JSON key ordering isn't deterministic?
  • What is your strategy for testing the transformation logic and mocking the external APIs?

“The scope of this thing caught me off guard.”

Did a domain round for a Production Engineer role at CoreWeave. It was resume-based plus some Kubernetes questions, pretty standard infra interview stuff, nothing too wild.
  • Walk me through your resume and relevant experience.
  • Questions about Kubernetes concepts and how you've used it in production.

“Standard opener but I always fumble the pacing on these.”

CoreWeave·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
System design round at Coreweave for a software engineer role. The main problem was designing a human task distribution system, which sounds straightforward until you actually start thinking through all the edge cases around duplicate work and timeouts.
  • Design a workflow system that assigns tasks to human workers, prevents duplicate assignments, handles worker timeouts, and lets operators track overall progress.
  • How would you prevent two workers from claiming the same task at the same time?
  • How would you handle a worker who goes offline or abandons a task mid-completion?
  • How would you prioritize urgent tasks over regular ones in the queue?
  • How would you add a quality review step to the workflow?

“This was the core question and it took me a few minutes to even figure out where to start.”

May 2026
Coreweave software engineer interview with a system design question around building a predicate evaluation engine. Not a typical LeetCode grind, more of a design-your-own-mini-language problem which I wasn't expecting.
  • Design a data structure that can represent and evaluate boolean predicate expressions like `abc > 5 and (test < 8 or team > 9)`, supporting comparisons, logical operators, parentheses, and evaluation against a variable dictionary.

“I spent the first few minutes just staring at the problem trying to figure out if they wanted a parser or a data structure or both.”

CoreWeave·Software Engineer·Take-home Assignment

May 2026
Coreweave Software Engineer interview that was basically a design-and-implement exercise: build a CLI tool that pulls data from an authenticated remote service, parses the response, and writes it to a relational database. More of a take-home style prompt than a whiteboard grind.
  • Design and implement a CLI program that fetches data from a token-authenticated HTTP endpoint, parses the JSON response, and inserts the records into a relational database. Walk through how you'd structure the code, manage config, handle errors, and test it.

“This is one of those questions that looks manageable until you actually start thinking about all the moving parts.”

CoreWeave·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Interviewed for an Observability Engineer role at CoreWeave. The whole thing was a deep dive into observability fundamentals, more conceptual than I expected, and the speculative question at the end about adding new pillars genuinely made me think on my feet in a way I wasn't ready for.
  • Walk me through the three pillars of observability. What is each one best at, and where does each fall short?
  • What is cardinality in the context of metrics, why does high cardinality cause problems for storage and querying, and what approaches can you use to keep it under control?
  • What are dimensions or labels and tags in observability, and how does dimensional slicing help during incident investigation?
  • If you could add a fourth or fifth pillar to the traditional observability model, what would you propose and why?

“I started with metrics because that felt safest, talked about aggregation and alerting, then moved to logs for raw context, then traces for distributed request flow.”

CoreWeave·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Phone screen for a Production Engineer role at CoreWeave. The whole thing was a practical terminal exercise, no theory, just spin something up and make it work. Pretty refreshing compared to the usual leetcode grind.
  • Start an HTTP server from the terminal, write a program to query one of its endpoints, parse the response to identify relevant machines, then send HTTP POST requests to mark those machines as offline.

“This is a full mini-task disguised as a single question.”
