eBay·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Technical phone screen for a software engineer role at eBay. One regex question, pretty focused, not a lot of back-and-forth beyond that.
  • Write a regular expression that matches valid US phone numbers with 10 digits, where the area code can optionally be in parentheses and digits may be separated by hyphens or other delimiters. How many distinct valid formats does your regex accept?

“The regex part itself wasn't too bad but the follow-up about counting distinct valid formats is where I started fumbling.”

eBay·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Part two of the eBay software engineer loop was a mix of leadership and system design, with the interviewer pushing hard on past project details. Less about theory, more about whether you actually made the calls you're claiming you made.
  • Walk me through a past project you led or contributed to significantly, and explain the technical decisions behind the design.
  • What trade-offs did you consider in your design, and what did you end up deprioritizing and why?
  • What problems did you run into during the project, and how did you resolve them?

“This is the kind of question that sounds easy until you're mid-answer and realize you can't remember why you made half the choices you made two years ago.”

eBay coding round for a Software Engineer role, graph-based LeetCode questions. Went smoothly, solved both without much trouble.
  • Given a list of courses and their prerequisites, determine whether it's possible to finish all courses (course schedule / cycle detection in a directed graph).

“Both problems were essentially the same pattern so once I got the first one down the second was just a variation.”

eBay full-stack round that ended with a surprise API design segment after the coding portion wrapped up early. No implementation, just a conversation, but it covered a lot of ground fast.
  • How would you turn your coding solution into a production API?
  • Where would you store per-user ad state in this system?
  • What error responses should this API expose to callers?
  • How would you design the schema for this API?
  • Would you use REST for this API, or something else, and why?
  • When should you use PUT versus GET for this API, and how would you structure the URLs?

“I hadn't thought about this at all during the coding part, so pivoting felt a bit abrupt.”

Short coding screen at eBay, one question about string manipulation. Pretty straightforward stuff, nothing that should trip you up if you know your basic built-ins.
  • Given a list of characters, find the difference between the count of uppercase and lowercase letters using built-in string methods.

“Went fine.”

eBay SWE interview had me building out a full FileSystem class from scratch, pulling together a bunch of features that apparently built on each other across prior rounds. It was one of those design-heavy coding problems where the individual pieces aren't too bad but combining them cleanly under pressure is where things get messy.
  • Design and implement a FileSystem class that supports basic file operations: adding a file, getting its size, deleting it, and listing files sorted by size descending and name ascending.
  • Extend the FileSystem to support searching for files by a given prefix and suffix.
  • Add user management to the FileSystem: support adding users with a storage capacity, letting users add files, and evicting the largest files first when a user exceeds their capacity.
  • Add a copyFile operation that duplicates a file while preserving both its size and its original owner.
  • Implement compressFile and decompressFile operations with state tracking, ensuring that decompressing a file respects the user's current available capacity.

“The sorting requirement is where I slipped up initially.”

Did a technical phone screen for a software engineer role at eBay that was basically one big design-and-implement question about bitmap block management. More depth than I expected for a phone round, they really wanted to dig into data structure tradeoffs and not just get a working solution.
  • Design and implement a BitmapBlock class that manages a fixed-size bitmap of allocation slots, supporting construction, contiguous block allocation from a given index, searching for free contiguous blocks, and counting the number of maximal free runs.

“This took up the whole interview.”

eBay·Machine Learning Engineer·Take-home Assignment

Apr 2026
eBay ML engineer take-home that was basically a mini research project. You had to build a full image-text retrieval pipeline from scratch using ResNet-50 and a sentence transformer, including the joint embedding space, a contrastive loss, and retrieval metrics. More involved than I expected for a single assignment.
  • Build a model that projects both image and text encoders into a shared embedding space, train it with a contrastive loss like InfoNCE, and evaluate retrieval quality using metrics like Recall@k and MRR.

“This was the whole assignment in one shot.”

eBay software engineer interview with a tree problem that looked clean on the surface but had enough moving parts to trip you up if you weren't careful about what you were tracking at each node.
  • Given a binary tree, count how many subtrees satisfy two conditions simultaneously: the absolute difference between the left and right subtree heights is at most 1, and the sum of all node values in that subtree is even.

“The two-condition part is what got me at first.”

Third round coding interview at eBay for a software engineer role. One question, LRU Cache, Indian interviewer. Pretty standard as far as these go.
  • Design and implement an LRU (Least Recently Used) cache with get and put operations, both running in O(1) time.

“Classic problem, I'd done it before, but there's always that moment where you second-guess whether to reach for a doubly linked list plus hashmap or try to get clever.”
