Google·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Google SWE coding round with a single algorithm question about adding two large numbers represented as digit lists. Pretty standard stuff but the edge cases are where they really watch you.
  • Given two lists where each element is a digit of a large integer (most significant digit first), write a function that adds the two numbers and returns the result as a list. The lists may be empty or contain only zeros.

“The core logic clicked fast for me, reverse both lists, add digit by digit with a carry, reverse the result back.”

Google system design round, got asked to build a concert ticketing service from scratch. Pretty open-ended and I wasn't totally sure how deep to go on the backend vs the product side.
  • Design a concert ticketing service.

“I jumped straight into the database schema and seat reservation logic, which felt right at the time, but I think I skipped over clarifying questions that would've helped a lot.”

Google PM interview with a classic product design question. Nothing too surprising but it took me longer than expected to find an angle that didn't feel generic.
  • Design a product that encourages people to read more.

“I started with user segmentation which felt right, but I spent way too long on it and rushed the actual solution.”

Google SWE coding round, one problem the whole time. Stack-based string decoding. Felt okay about it but I kept second-guessing my edge case handling mid-interview which probably showed.
  • Given an encoded string in the format k[encoded_string] where the substring inside brackets is repeated k times (with possible nesting), write a function to decode it. For example, '3[a2[c]]' should return 'accaccacc'.

“I got the basic structure pretty fast, like yes, stack, okay.”

PM interview at Google with a market sizing question about Hershey's chocolate bar sales in the US. Pretty standard estimation exercise but it still made me sweat.
  • Estimate how many Hershey's chocolate bars were sold in the US in the past year.

“I started top-down with US population, segmented by age groups and rough purchase frequency, then sanity checked against total candy market size.”

Google system design round, one question about building autocomplete for iMessage. Pretty open-ended, not much else to go on.
  • Design an autocomplete system for iMessage.

“Spent the first few minutes just trying to scope it down because autocomplete can mean a lot of things.”

Went through a solutions architect screen at Google and got hit with a project health metrics question. Pretty conceptual but harder to nail than it sounds when you're on the spot.
  • What KPIs would you use to measure the health of a project?

“I went straight to schedule variance and budget burn rate, which felt safe, but I could tell they wanted more.”

Google·Product Manager·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral loop at Google for a PM role, heavy on supply chain and cross-functional scenarios. Nothing too wild but the questions were layered and they clearly wanted specifics, not generalities.
  • Walk me through experience that's directly relevant to this role. What were the specifics?
  • Describe a time you continuously improved a product or process over time. What drove the optimization and what did you measure?
  • Tell me about a difficult stakeholder situation. What was the conflict and how did it resolve?
  • How have you delivered results under severe time or resource constraints? What did you cut and why?
  • Give me an example of managing capacity, lead time, and cost in a supply chain context.
  • How have you applied supply chain thinking to a role that was primarily focused on project management?

“I rambled a bit here trying to cover too much ground.”

Google·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Google data scientist screen with a pandas question that looked straightforward but had a specific twist around transform vs groupby that I didn't fully think through in the moment.
  • Given a usage stats table with user_id, team_id, messages_sent, and date, write Python code that adds a column called 'delta_from_team_mean' showing each user's deviation from their team's average messages sent. Use transform, and explain why transform is the right tool here instead of groupby.mean.

“I knew transform existed but my gut kept pulling me toward groupby.mean and then merging back, which is exactly the wrong move here.”

Got a product critique question at Google that sounds easy until you're actually sitting there trying to pick something that won't make you look naive or overly safe.
  • Name a product that fails to live up to its company's own promises or stated values.

“I blanked for a second and almost said something boring.”
