Google·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Jul 2026
Google onsite coding round, one problem the whole session with a follow-up tacked on once I had the boolean version working. The core problem looked deceptively clean but the edge cases around the removed link's position tripped me up for a bit.
  • You're given an array representing the link weights of a gold chain. Remove exactly one link, reconnect the remaining links into a chain, then check if you can make a single cut that splits the chain into two pieces of equal total weight. Return true if any valid (remove, cut) pair exists. Follow-up: return all such pairs.

“My first instinct was prefix sums, which was right, but I kept fumbling the boundary conditions.”

Google SWE coding round, one problem the whole time: compute total file system size from a root node. Seemed straightforward but the follow-ups were where things got interesting.
  • Given a file system represented as a tree, write a function that computes the total size of all files reachable from a given root directory node.
  • What are the time and space complexities of your solution?
  • If the file system allowed shared references where the same subtree could be reached from multiple parents, how would you use memoization to avoid recomputing subtree sizes?

“Pretty clean recursive problem once you accept it's just a tree traversal.”

Google·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Interviewed at Google for a PM role, got hit with a classic WhatsApp prioritization question. Pretty standard product strategy territory but still a lot of room to fumble if you're not careful about scoping.
  • You're the PM for WhatsApp. What would you prioritize for the next quarter?

“My first instinct was to just list features and that was the wrong move.”

PM interview at Google with a product strategy question that put me in the shoes of a founder pitching to investors. Just the one question but it had a lot of moving parts.
  • How would you pitch a new database product to a venture capital firm that focuses on databases and analytics?

“This one tripped me up more than I expected.”

Google SWE coding round, one question the whole time. The problem was a Mahjong hand validator and it looked deceptively clean on the surface but the combinatorics got messy fast.
  • Given an array of 14 integers (each between 1 and 9) representing a Mahjong hand, determine whether the hand is a winning hand. A winning hand consists of exactly one pair and four melds, where each meld is either three identical tiles or three consecutive values.

“I started by sorting and trying to greedily strip out sequences and triplets, which works in some cases but blows up when you have ambiguous tile groups.”

PM case interview at Google for the Waymo autonomous vehicles team. One question, big scope, Larry Page as the fictional stakeholder. Felt like a strategy whiteboard session more than a traditional product interview.
  • You're the PM for Google's autonomous vehicles division. Leadership wants the product in market within five years. How do you make that happen?

“This one is deceptively massive.”

Interviewed for an ML engineer role at Google and got a string manipulation problem that looked deceptively simple at first glance.
  • Given two strings of equal length, is it possible to cut each string in half and combine the halves to form a palindrome?

“Spent the first few minutes just staring at the constraints.”

Got a product design question for a Google PM role, basically asked to design smart furniture. Short prompt, lots of room to go wrong.
  • How would you design smart furniture for Google?

“I froze for a second because the scope is just enormous.”

Google PM interview with a heavy strategy focus. The whole session was basically one long case about competitive threats and tech trends, layered into increasingly specific follow-ups. Felt more like a consulting case than a traditional PM screen.
  • What are the three biggest threats to Google over the next five years, and why?
  • Name three technology trends Google should be watching closely, then pick two and explain why they matter.
  • For one of the trends you selected, walk through its top three challenges, how Google could build a product around it, and at least one way to monetize it.

“I went with AI search disruption, regulatory pressure, and the shift in ad spend toward closed ecosystems like TikTok and Amazon.”

Data science interview at Google with a product metrics question framed around Lyft. Just the one question from what I can tell, but it's the kind that spirals fast if you don't have a structure ready.
  • If you were the PM for Lyft, what dashboard would you build to monitor the overall health of the app?

“I blanked for a second on where to even start.”
