Google·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Google SWE coding round, one question about finding top-k users from chat logs. Pretty standard frequency counting problem but they wanted test cases too, which I almost forgot about.
  • Given a list of chat log entries in the format 'user_id message', find the top k users who sent the most messages. Return their user IDs. Logs and users can be up to 10^5 entries. Also provide test cases.

“The core logic wasn't bad.”

Google PM onsite with a single product strategy question about sunsetting YouTube. No fluff, just one big hairy scenario and a lot of silence while I tried to figure out where to even start.
  • You're a PM at Google. How would you go about sunsetting YouTube?

“I froze for a second because the premise felt almost absurd.”

Google·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral round at Google for a software engineering role. Just the one question but they really dug into it with follow-ups, so it ended up being a longer conversation than I expected.
  • Tell me about a time you learned something from a peer, mentor, or someone outside your team and then actually applied it to your work. What did you learn, how did you use it, and what changed as a result?

“The base question felt manageable but the follow-ups were where I started to stumble.”

Google SWE interview with a tree propagation problem that looks deceptively like a BFS question but really isn't. Took me a while to even figure out what they were actually asking.
  • You have a large n-ary tree. The root can pass a message to one child per iteration, and in each subsequent iteration every already-informed node can pass the message to one of its children simultaneously. What is the minimum number of iterations needed to inform every node in the tree?

“Spent the first few minutes thinking it was just a level-order traversal thing and almost said the answer was the height of the tree.”

Google product design question about how you'd technically build a drawing/paint feature into Google Docs. Pretty niche and I wasn't sure if they wanted a PM answer or an engineering one.
  • How would you design the technical architecture of a Google Docs product that includes an MS Paint-style drawing feature?

“I kept second-guessing how deep to go technically.”

PM interview at Google focused on Search growth strategy. Single question but it opened up into a pretty broad conversation about metrics, user behavior, and where Search even has room to grow at this point.
  • You're the PM for Google Search. How would you grow this product?

“My first instinct was to talk about new user acquisition and I immediately regretted it mid-sentence.”

Google system design round, one question about building a hotel booking service. Not a lot of context given upfront so I spent probably too long clarifying scope before actually designing anything.
  • Design a hotel booking service.

“I started with the data model and search before thinking about the reservation flow, which was probably backwards.”

PM interview at Google with a product sense question about a made-up hardware product. Pretty light on details but the question itself was a decent exercise in GTM thinking.
  • Google just launched a new generational elevator. How would you convince customers to buy it?

“I spent the first minute just trying to figure out what a 'generational elevator' even means and I think that confusion showed.”

Google SWE interview with a graph/tree traversal problem dressed up in a fun theme. The chicken ancestor question sounds silly but it's a real algorithmic problem and they pushed into complexity tradeoffs pretty quickly.
  • Given a set of chickens and their parent-child relationships, write a function that determines whether two given chickens share a common ancestor. Also discuss what data structures you'd use to store the relationships and what the time and space complexity looks like.

“The chicken framing is funny but don't let it distract you, it's just an ancestor graph problem.”

Google·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Two behavioral questions for a Software Engineer role at Google, both pretty standard but the second one tripped me up more than I expected.
  • Describe a time you had a conflict at work, whether with a peer, someone from another team, or your manager. How did you handle it, and what would you change if you could do it over?
  • Tell me about a time you had to communicate a change in scope, timeline, or quality to leadership or external stakeholders. How did you frame the trade-offs?

“I had a decent story ready for this one.”
