Google·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Interviewed for a research scientist role at Google. The conversation was less about past work and more about where I thought the field was going and what I'd actually do once I got there. Felt more like a research discussion than a traditional interview, which I wasn't fully ready for.
  • If you joined the team, what would you focus on? What are the biggest unsolved problems in your research area, and how would you go about tackling them?

“This is the question I underestimated.”

Google·Product Manager·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral round at Google for a PM role. Just one question but it had some weight to it.
  • Tell me about a time you fell short of a goal you set out to achieve.

“I had a story ready but halfway through I realized I was making myself sound way too passive, like things just happened to me.”

Google·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Google PM interview, product design question about a toy remote control car. Pretty open-ended and I wasn't totally sure how deep to go on the 'toy' angle versus treating it like a real consumer product.
  • Design an app for a toy remote control car.

“My first instinct was to jump straight into features, which was probably the wrong move.”

Google·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Security interview at Google, one question about a pretty foundational networking attack concept. Short and to the point, felt more like a screen than a deep technical dive.
  • What is a denial-of-service attack and what are some ways to mitigate it?

“Covered the basics: volumetric floods, protocol abuse, application-layer stuff.”

Google SWE coding round, one tree reconstruction problem and that was basically it. Pretty standard technical screen but the question has more edge cases than it looks.
  • Given the preorder and inorder traversals of a binary tree, reconstruct the original tree.

“I knew the general idea going in but fumbled the index math when splitting the inorder array recursively.”

Google·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Interviewed for a Data Scientist role at Google and got a classic anagram problem dressed up as a backend feature requirement. Nothing too wild, but the complexity follow-up kept it from being totally routine.
  • Write a Python function that checks whether two input strings are anagrams of each other, and explain the time and space complexity of your solution.

“I went with sorted strings first because it's the easiest to explain out loud.”

Google·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral round at Google for a software engineering role, basically one big leadership question dressed up with a bunch of sub-parts. Not the most technical interview I've done but it required more prep than I expected.
  • Tell me about a time you took on a leadership role, formal or informal, to drive a project or change forward. How did you set direction, get people on board, deal with pushback, and know when you'd succeeded? Ideally a situation where you had no direct authority over the people involved.

“The 'no direct authority' part is what tripped me up at first.”

Google·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Apr 2026
Google SWE onsite coding round in NYC. One problem, string decompression with nested groups, a twist on a classic LC problem with different syntax. Felt manageable once I recognized the pattern but the parsing details were annoying.
  • Given a compressed string where parenthesized groups are followed by a repeat count like {k}, write a function to fully decompress it. Groups can be nested arbitrarily deep.

“I recognized it as a variant of the classic decode-string problem pretty quickly, but the syntax difference tripped me up for a bit.”

Google·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Interviewed at Google for a machine learning role and got hit with a foundational theory question that I thought I knew cold until I actually had to explain it out loud.
  • What is entropy and how is it applied in machine learning?

“I knew the textbook definition but fumbled when they pushed me to connect it to actual ML use cases.”

Google·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
System design round at Google focused on building a CI/CD pipeline with intelligent failure handling. The problem had a lot of moving parts and I don't think I covered everything as cleanly as I wanted to.
  • Design a CI/CD system that detects test failures, applies retry logic for flaky tests, and sends smart notifications to the right teams.

“I jumped straight into the data flow before nailing down the requirements and kind of paid for it later.”
