Gusto·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Had a technical phone screen for a software engineer role at Gusto. One question, pretty focused on data structures and binary search. Not a bad experience but the problem had some nuance I didn't fully appreciate until after.
  • Design a time-based key-value store that supports storing multiple values per key at different timestamps, and retrieving the most recent value at or before a given timestamp.

“I jumped straight to a hashmap mapping keys to lists of (timestamp, value) pairs, which is the right structure.”

Gusto·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Jul 2026
Case-style interview at Gusto for a Data Scientist role, sat down with a PM to talk through how you'd drive adoption for a new automated tax-filing feature. Pretty product-analytics heavy for a DS interview, which I wasn't fully expecting.
  • A new automated tax-filing feature is launching soon. How would you find the biggest opportunities to drive user adoption, what metrics would you track from day one, and how would you segment users to size each opportunity?

“This question is wider than it looks.”
