Illumio·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jul 2026
System design round at Illumio for a software engineer role. The main problem was designing a messenger app with AI moderation baked in, and the follow-ups pushed pretty hard on production realities like burst traffic and async safety checks.
  • Design a messaging application that supports sending messages between users, viewing chat history, and integrating with an external AI service that flags inappropriate content.
  • How would you handle a sudden spike in messages being sent at once without crashing the service or running out of memory?
  • The AI moderation service has high latency. How do you keep the user experience good while still making sure unsafe messages don't get through?

“The core design wasn't too bad to sketch out.”

Interviewed for a software engineering role at Illumio and got hit with the classic number of islands problem. Pretty standard coding round, nothing too surprising if you've done any graph traversal prep.
  • Given a 2D binary grid where '1' represents land and '0' represents water, count the number of distinct islands. Islands are formed by horizontally or vertically connected land cells.

“I went with DFS, marking cells as visited as I sank them.”

Illumio·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Second round at Illumio for a software engineering role, focused entirely on system design. The whole session was spent on API gateway design, covering rate limiting, routing, and auth.
  • Design an API Gateway, covering rate limiting, routing, and authentication.

“This is one of those questions that feels manageable until you're actually in it.”

Kafka deep-dive at Illumio for a software engineer role. The whole session was basically one long scenario question about message processing failures and offset management. Pretty intense if you haven't thought carefully about consumer semantics before.
  • A Kafka consumer is processing messages from a partition. Offset 2 fails due to a handler exception, but offset 4 gets processed and its offset is committed. How do you recover and reprocess offset 2 without losing data or reprocessing offsets you've already committed successfully?

“This one took me a minute to even fully parse.”

Interviewed at Illumio for a software engineer role and got a coding question that was basically a Two Sum variant but with a catch: the input was unsorted and you couldn't sort it either.
  • Given an unsorted array of integers, find two numbers that sum to a target value. Sorting the array is not allowed.

“Looks like Two Sum at first glance, but the no-sorting constraint forces you to think about it differently.”

Illumio·Software Engineer·Executive / Final Round

May 2026
VP round at Illumio for a software engineering role. Mostly centered on design tradeoffs and digging into past projects and conflicts, the kind of round where you can't really prep your way out of it.
  • Walk me through a past project where you had to make significant design tradeoffs. What did you choose and why?
  • Tell me about a conflict you had with a teammate or stakeholder. How did you handle it and what was the outcome?

“This is where the VP round gets uncomfortable.”

Illumio·Software Engineer·Hiring Manager Screen

May 2026
Two-session manager-style deep dive at Illumio for a software engineer role, focused entirely on Kafka internals. Less coding, more 'explain your reasoning and defend it' back-and-forth. Came away feeling like I knew maybe 70% of what they wanted.
  • How does Kafka partitioning work, and what factors should guide how many partitions you choose for a topic?
  • Walk me through how you'd configure a Kafka pipeline to guarantee at-least-once delivery, and where duplicates can still sneak in.
  • What levers do you pull to maximize Kafka producer throughput, and what are the trade-offs of each?
  • How do replication factor, ISR, and min.insync.replicas work together, and how do those settings affect your throughput and durability guarantees?

“This started simple and then got uncomfortable fast.”

Illumio·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral round at Illumio for a software engineer role, focused almost entirely on how I left my last job. Not what I expected going in.
  • Why did you leave your previous company, and what was the broader context around the departure?
  • How many people on your team were affected, and did you see any signals before it happened?
  • How did you handle the situation both personally and professionally in the aftermath?
  • What did the experience teach you, and how has it influenced what you're looking for in your next role?

“I'd rehearsed a version of this but not well enough.”

Jun 2024
Two system design rounds at Illumio for a software engineer role. The first round was scenario-based, covering how to pull data from a database and publish it across multiple cloud providers, with deep dives into Kafka, failure handling, and idempotency. Pretty intense for a first round.
  • Design a system that reads data from a database and publishes it to multiple cloud environments.

“This one went deep fast.”

Illumio·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

May 2024
Two coding rounds at Illumio for a software engineer role. One of them had a spiral matrix problem, which is pretty much a classic but still requires you to actually think through the traversal logic under pressure.
  • Given an m x n matrix, return all elements in spiral order.

“The kind of problem that looks straightforward until you're actually writing the boundary conditions.”
