Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

May 2026
Onsite coding loop at Meta for a software engineer role. Three back-to-back problems covering array manipulation, graph search on a grid, and a social graph design question. A lot of ground to cover and the follow-ups kept coming.
  • Given a sorted integer array, modify it in-place so each distinct value appears exactly once at the front, preserving order. Return the prefix length. O(1) space, O(n) time. Follow-up: what if each value could appear up to k times?
  • Find the length of the longest strictly increasing path in an integer grid, where moves are up/down/left/right. How would you reconstruct the actual path, and how do you handle recursion depth on very large inputs?
  • Design a friend recommender for a social graph. Implement getCandidates (friends-of-friends excluding direct friends), recommendRandom (uniform random pick), and recommendTopK (ranked by mutual friend count, ties broken by user ID). Then discuss how you'd extend the scoring in production.

“Two-pointer setup, pretty classic.”

Meta SWE coding round, one question the whole time and it was the accounts merging problem. Union-Find heavy, not a vibe if you haven't drilled that pattern recently.
  • Given a list of accounts where each entry has a name followed by one or more emails, merge all accounts that share at least one email address. Return the merged accounts with emails sorted lexicographically, each preceded by the account name.

“I knew Union-Find was the move but fumbled the setup for a bit.”

PM estimation question at Meta, just the one question about bandwidth for a streaming product launch. Short session, felt more like a screen than a full round.
  • Estimate the bandwidth required to support a large-scale live TV streaming service launch.

“I started with concurrent users and worked down to bits per second per stream, which felt right.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral round at Meta for a SWE role, just the one question about feedback and growth. Pretty standard stuff but it made me realize I hadn't thought through a clean example beforehand.
  • Tell me about a time you received constructive feedback. What did you take away from it?

“I had an answer ready but it came out kind of vague.”

Meta PM interview, product metrics question for Facebook Lite. Not a lot of context shared about how it went but the question itself is a solid one worth thinking through carefully.
  • What metrics would you define to measure the success of Facebook Lite?

“This one trips people up because Lite isn't just a stripped-down Facebook.”

May 2026
Meta coding screen for a software engineer role. One algorithm question, palindrome-related, felt pretty manageable but the edge cases are where things get interesting.
  • Given a 0-indexed string of lowercase letters, you can change at most two characters. Return true if the string can be made into a palindrome with those changes, false otherwise.

“My first instinct was to count mismatched character pairs from both ends and see if two swaps cover them.”

Meta SWE coding round, one algorithmic problem the whole session. Sliding window stuff, but the exact-N-distinct constraint tripped me up more than I expected.
  • Given a string and an integer n, find the shortest contiguous substring that contains exactly n distinct characters. Discuss your algorithm's time and space complexity, handle edge cases, then implement it.

“My first instinct was sliding window but I kept conflating 'at most n distinct' with 'exactly n distinct' and that cost me probably five minutes of confused code.”

Short Meta interview, just one behavioral question that sounds simple but actually made me think harder than expected.
  • What do you do when you're asked something you don't know the answer to?

“I fumbled this a bit.”

Meta SWE coding round, one question the whole time. Pretty standard algorithmic problem but they pushed on complexity and edge cases more than I expected.
  • Given an unsorted array of integers and a value k, find the k-th largest element. Duplicates count as separate positions. Describe your approach and analyze time and space complexity, aiming for something better than a full sort.

“I jumped straight to the min-heap approach, size k, O(n log k) time.”

Interviewed for a BA role at Meta, got a customer segmentation question tied to a growth scenario. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • How would you segment customers to support a growth initiative?

“I went straight to demographic breakdowns and the interviewer just kind of waited, like she expected more.”
