Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Jun 2026
Went through what felt like a gauntlet of algorithm and design questions for a software engineering role at Meta. Four pretty dense problems back to back, covering everything from string parsing to stock trading variants. Not a casual screen.
  • Given a text document, implement a word counter that handles edge cases like contractions, hyphenated compounds, numerals, Unicode, and emojis. Define your tokenization policy explicitly, then build a streaming solution for very large files. Discuss time and space complexity and provide test cases.
  • Design and implement a generic Node class for a rooted tree where each node can have any number of children. Include addChild, removeChild, moveSubtree, preorder and breadth-first traversal, and a find method that returns the path from root. Enforce that cycles are impossible and discuss complexity for each operation.
  • Given a string and a dictionary of valid words, determine if the string can be segmented into a sequence of dictionary words. Return a valid segmentation if one exists, or an empty result if not. Optimize for repeated queries against the same fixed dictionary and very long input strings.
  • Given stock prices by day, find the buy and sell days that maximize profit with exactly one transaction and return the day indices. Then extend to at most two transactions with a mandatory one-day cooldown after each sell, plus an optional fixed fee per sell. Provide the algorithm, correctness reasoning, and complexity.

“I spent probably too long defining what a 'word' even is before writing a single line of code.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jun 2026
Meta PM interview with a single product strategy question about building a lending and borrowing feature on Facebook. Pretty open-ended, which sounds like freedom until you realize how many directions you can go wrong.
  • Should Meta build a product that allows users to borrow and lend money through Facebook?

“I spent the first minute or so just trying to figure out where to even start.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
Meta system design round for a software engineering role. One big open-ended question about a downed server that kept expanding into architecture territory. Felt like it went okay but the scope was wide enough that I kept second-guessing whether I was going deep enough or just listing things.
  • A standalone web server is suddenly serving a down page. Walk through how you'd diagnose the root cause across different failure scenarios, network, DNS, disk, memory, CPU, application errors, dependency failures, a bad deploy, etc. Then talk through what architectural and operational changes you'd make to improve resilience going forward.

“This one is deceptively wide.”

Meta SWE interview with a bracket-removal problem. The core challenge was figuring out the minimum deletions to make a string's brackets valid and properly nested, which sounds straightforward until you actually try to implement it cleanly.
  • Given a string containing letters and bracket characters from the set (), [], {}, remove the minimum number of brackets so that the remaining brackets are properly matched and nested. Non-bracket characters must stay in their original positions. Return any valid result.

“The example they gave was something like `([{ab)` and the answer was `(ab)`.”

Meta SWE coding question, pretty straightforward array manipulation problem but the setup with two separate arrays tripped me up for a second.
  • Given two arrays of departure ticket prices and return ticket prices, find the minimum total cost for a round trip.

“Seemed obvious at first, just grab the min from each array and add them.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Hiring Manager Screen

Interviewed for a product designer role at Meta, just one question worth noting from what I can remember.
  • How would your team describe you?

“Felt like a soft opener but I fumbled it a bit.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Meta coding screen, pretty much a single algorithmic problem the whole time. Nothing fancy, just needed to know your two-pointer fundamentals.
  • Given a string, return true if it can be made into a palindrome by removing at most one character.

“Two pointers from both ends.”

Meta SWE coding round, one question the whole time. Classic hard sliding window problem and I spent way too long second-guessing my approach before getting anywhere useful.
  • Given a string and a list of equal-length words, find all starting indices in the string where a substring is a concatenation of every word in the list (in any order).

“Knew immediately it was a sliding window plus hashmap problem but kept fumbling the window size calculation.”

Meta SWE interview that went deep on a nested list depth-sum problem. They wanted both recursive and iterative solutions, complexity analysis, and a discussion on interface design for nested element access. A lot to cover in one question.
  • Given a nested structure of integers and lists, compute the sum of all integers each multiplied by their depth, where the top level counts as depth 1. Handle edge cases like empty lists, deeply nested structures, and negative integers.
  • Walk through both a recursive (DFS) and an iterative (BFS or stack-based) approach to the nested depth-sum problem, and analyze the time and space complexity of each.
  • How would you design an interface for accessing elements within a nested structure like this?

“The base case tripped me up more than I expected.”

Meta·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Meta DS interview focused on measuring success for Instagram's group video-call feature. Pretty product-analytics-heavy, more so than I expected for a data scientist role.
  • Instagram just shipped a group video-call feature. How would you define business success for it, which engagement and retention metrics would you track, and how would you think about churn in this context?

“This question is deceptively wide.”
