Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jun 2026
Meta product design interview with a single open-ended product design prompt. Pretty standard format but the scope of the question leaves a lot of room to go sideways if you're not careful about framing early.
  • Design an app to help users plan road trips.

“I jumped straight into features and had to backtrack once I realized I hadn't defined who the user even was.”

Got a product sense question at Meta for a PM role, basically asked to design something art-related. Short prompt, a lot of open space to fill.
  • Design an art-related product for Meta.

“Wide open prompt and I kind of froze for a second trying to figure out what angle to take.”

ML engineer system design round at Meta, one question about building a comment moderation system at scale. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Design an automated comment moderation system.

“Spent the first few minutes going too broad, talking about rule-based filters before the interviewer nudged me toward the ML side of things.”

Meta data scientist interview focused entirely on a product experimentation scenario around notification-based account ordering. The whole thing was one extended case question with multiple parts, and it pushed pretty hard on experiment design and interpreting messy results.
  • Before running any experiment, how would you use existing data to evaluate whether sorting accounts by unread notification count is even worth testing?
  • Design an A/B test to validate this account-ordering feature. Walk through your choice of population, treatment vs. control setup, success metrics, and how long you'd run it.
  • The experiment results show account switching goes down but total active accounts goes up. How do you read that and what do you do next?

“This part tripped me up because I jumped straight to experiment design.”

Meta PM interview for Instagram Shops, got hit with a growth/metrics question that sounds straightforward but has a lot of moving parts once you actually dig in.
  • As the PM for Instagram Shops, what would you do to increase the number of transactions on the platform?

“I went straight to the funnel and started breaking down where drop-off happens, discovery to product page to checkout.”

Jun 2026
PM interview at Meta, one question about goal-setting for a specific product. Short and focused, not a lot of context to go on.
  • How would you define goals and metrics for Facebook Rooms?

“This tripped me up more than it should have.”

Meta data science interview with a pretty involved probability and statistics problem centered around ad feed design. One question but it had multiple parts and took up the whole session.
  • A feed has 100 posts. Strategy A randomly makes each post an ad with probability 0.04. Strategy B deterministically places exactly one ad per 25 posts with spacing to avoid adjacency. For each: compute the expected number of ads and variance; compute P(ads >= 9) exactly and via normal approximation with continuity correction; under Strategy A derive the expected number of adjacent ad pairs and approximate P(at least one adjacent pair); and finally explain which strategy is more likely to produce back-to-back ads and why.

“This one ran long.”

Meta SWE coding round, one algorithmic problem about rotational symmetry of numbers. Pretty niche constraint-based generation problem that took me a minute to fully wrap my head around.
  • Given an integer n, find all n-digit numbers that look the same when rotated 180 degrees. Valid digit pairs under rotation are: 0↔0, 1↔1, 8↔8, and 6↔9.

“First instinct was brute force: generate all n-digit numbers, check each one.”

Meta SWE interview covering the final level of a multi-part banking system design problem. The two functions were about merging accounts and querying historical balances, both of which had enough edge cases to keep things interesting.
  • Implement a merge_accounts function that folds one bank account into another: combine balances, combine outgoing transfer totals, move all pending scheduled payments from the source account to the destination, and delete the source. Return true on success, false if either account is missing or both IDs are the same.
  • Implement a get_balance function that returns an account's balance at a specific historical timestamp, not the current balance. Return null if the account didn't exist yet at that time.

“The scheduled payments transfer was the part that tripped me up.”

Meta product sense question about expanding into food. Pretty open-ended, which I was not ready for.
  • Meta is looking to enter the food industry. What would you build?

“I went straight to a food delivery play because that felt obvious, and I think that's exactly where I lost them.”
