Meta PM interview with a product design question focused on an underserved demographic. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Design a rideshare product or feature specifically for senior citizens.

“I spent the first minute or two trying to narrow the user group because 'senior citizens' is a wide net.”

Meta DS interview with a meaty A/B testing case that had a twist built right into the setup. The question looked like a standard experiment evaluation until the segmentation numbers came out and things got complicated fast.
  • An A/B test for a new ad-ranking algorithm shows a 5% overall CTR lift but a 100% lift specifically for Indian males aged 18-24. Walk through what analyses you'd run to decide whether to launch, list possible root causes for that heterogeneous effect, and describe what additional data or follow-up experiments you'd need before rollout.

“This one took me a second to even figure out where to start.”

Meta SWE coding round, just one algorithmic problem on binary trees. Pretty standard for what they throw at you, though the problem has more edge cases than it looks like at first glance.
  • Given a binary tree, find the maximum path sum where a path can start and end at any node in the tree.

“My first instinct was to just do a DFS and track the running max, which is the right direction, but I kept second-guessing whether the path had to go through the root.”

Meta Production Engineer coding screen, one question, pretty systems-flavored. The problem looked like a scripting exercise but had enough moving parts that I had to think carefully about the rolling window logic.
  • Write a script that reads vmstat output from stdin and, given a metric column name, a threshold, a max violation count, and a time window in seconds, tracks how many lines in the rolling window have the metric strictly above the threshold. If violations exceed the max, print the offending lines.

“The rolling window part is where I got tripped up.”

Meta SWE coding round with a formula parsing problem. The question looks like a string manipulation task but the nested parentheses make it way more involved than it first appears.
  • Given a chemical formula string like 'H2O', 'Mg(OH)2', or 'K4(ON(SO3)2)2', write a function that parses it and returns the count of each atom in lexicographical order.

“The basic cases are fine but the nested parentheses are where things get messy.”

Meta ML engineer interview with a classic in-place merge problem. Nothing fancy, just one tight algorithmic question that punishes you if you haven't thought carefully about traversal direction.
  • You have two sorted arrays A and B. Array A has extra space at the end to fit all of B's elements. Merge B into A in-place so the result is sorted, using O(m+n) time and O(1) space. Walk through your approach and argue why it's correct.

“The key move is starting from the back of both arrays instead of the front.”

Brutal Meta DS interview question covering basically every dimension of experiment design you can think of. The kind of question where you realize halfway through your answer that you've already forgotten three of the ten sub-parts.
  • Design a rigorous experiment to evaluate a pinned-unread chat feature. Your answer should address: randomization unit and cross-contamination prevention, eligibility and pre-exposure criteria, primary and secondary metrics plus guardrails, power and sample size given heavy-tailed engagement, test duration and seasonality, novelty effects and ramp plan, network effects in group chats and SUTVA risks, handling users who switch between multiple accounts, instrumentation and data quality checks, and a pre-registered analysis plan including variance reduction and how to handle conflicting metric signals.

“This one is a monster.”

Interviewed for a software engineer role at Meta, two algorithmic problems that both had follow-ups tacked on. The questions were well-designed and pushed past the obvious solution pretty quickly.
  • Given a string of lowercase letters, repeatedly remove any maximal contiguous group of two or more identical characters until no such groups remain. Return the final string. Design a linear time and space solution, explain why it terminates and is correct, then extend it to support a threshold k (delete groups of length at least k), and finally handle streaming input where characters arrive one at a time.
  • Given the root of a binary tree, construct a 'mirror boundary' traversal: left boundary nodes from the deepest leftmost leaf up to root.left (bottom-up), then the root, then right boundary nodes from root.right down to the deepest rightmost leaf (top-down). Nodes that are both boundary and leaf should appear only once. Return the list of values in O(n) time and O(h) space where h is the tree height.

“Stack-based approach came to me pretty fast, you push characters and track counts, pop when the count hits the threshold.”

Meta product design interview, sports industry prompt. Pretty open-ended and I wasn't sure how deep to go on the domain knowledge side versus just showing product instincts.
  • Design a product solution for the sports industry.

“I went straight to fan engagement because it felt safe, probably too safe.”

Meta PM interview with a product design question about building a volunteer feature into Facebook. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • How would you design a new volunteer feature for the Facebook app?

“I went straight to listing features and kind of skipped the 'who is this actually for' step, which I regretted midway through.”
