Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Apr 2026
Round 3 at Meta for a software engineer role. The interviewer kept firing questions the whole time, which meant I ended up writing everything by hand instead of leaning on AI tools at all. Felt more like a live interrogation than a typical coding round.
  • Given a list of words, find a subset that maximizes the number of unique characters across the selected words.

“Three distinct steps to the solution, and the interviewer wanted me to optimize it in a specific direction he had in mind.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Recruiter / HR Screen

Behavioral screen at Meta, pretty standard stuff. One question about self-improvement that I fumbled a bit by going too negative before catching myself.
  • What areas do you think you could improve on, and how are you working on them?

“I went too self-critical at first, listed like three things wrong with me before realizing that's not what they want.”

Meta·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Meta DS technical screen, one SQL question that looked manageable until I actually started writing it. Two separate metrics in one query, timezone conversion, and a 7-day rolling window all at once.
  • Given a users table and a calls table for a voice-calling product, write SQL to compute two metrics per report date: (1) the percentage of callers who made at least 20 calls in the past 7 days out of all callers active in that window, and (2) the percentage of Great Britain daily active users who had 50 or more total call participations (as caller or recipient) on that date. Return one row per report date with both percentages.

“The timezone piece got me first.”

Meta·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Meta ML engineer system design round, basically one big question about building a TikTok-style video recommendation system from scratch. Pretty intense scope for a single interview. Came out feeling okay but not great.
  • Design a short-video recommendation system end-to-end, similar to TikTok or Reels, that generates a personalized feed and handles scale to hundreds of millions of users.
  • How would you handle cold start for both new users and new videos in this system?
  • How would you approach exploration vs exploitation in a recommendation feed, and what percentage of traffic would you dedicate to exploration?
  • What are the main pitfalls in training and serving a ranking model at this scale, and how do you address position bias?

“This is a monster of a question.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Did a product sense round at Meta for a PM role. Just the one question but it took the whole session to unpack.
  • What is the most innovative idea you have ever had?

“I fumbled this more than I expected.”

Meta SWE coding round, got a next permutation problem and had to do it in-place with O(1) space. Pretty classic but the details trip you up if you haven't drilled it recently.
  • Given an integer array, modify it in-place to produce the next lexicographically greater permutation. If the array is already the largest permutation, rearrange it into the smallest (ascending) order. Must run in O(n) time with O(1) extra space.

“I knew the algorithm from somewhere but blanked on the exact steps mid-explanation.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Take-home Assignment

Apr 2026
Meta SWE take-home style coding round focused on real-world data wrangling in Python. The problem was messier than a typical leetcode question and felt closer to actual work, which was either refreshing or stressful depending on your tolerance for ambiguity.
  • Given two messy data sources with known issues (missing fields, corrupted records, orphaned entries, schema inconsistencies), implement a function that parses, merges, and aggregates the data into a clean summary dictionary matching a specified business output.

“The README spells out the known issues upfront which sounds helpful but also means you have no excuse for missing them.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
System design round at Meta for a software engineer role, focused entirely on designing Instagram with the home feed as the main feature. Pretty deep dive, lots of back and forth on tradeoffs.
  • Design Instagram, with the home feed as the primary feature. Walk through how you'd handle posts, follows, and serving a personalized feed to hundreds of millions of users.

“This question is deceptively wide.”

Meta·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Interviewed for a PM role at Meta, got a product strategy question about Facebook Marketplace that seemed straightforward but ended up being a bit of a rabbit hole once I started talking.
  • How would you set a goal for Facebook Marketplace?

“I jumped straight to GMV and engagement metrics without stopping to think about what Marketplace is actually trying to accomplish for Meta as a business.”

Meta·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Meta coding round, one problem about finding free time slots across multiple people's schedules. Pretty classic interval problem but the details trip you up if you're not careful.
  • Given a list of schedules where each person has a sorted list of non-overlapping busy intervals, find all time slots where every person is free. Only consider the range between the earliest start and latest end across all schedules.

“My first instinct was to merge all the busy intervals into one big union and then just look at the gaps.”
