Microsoft·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Microsoft data science interview with a coding-style question about text processing. Pretty lean on details but the core problem was straightforward enough to unpack.
  • Given a list of sentences, how would you find the top N most frequently occurring words?

“Classic frequency counting problem.”

Microsoft·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Microsoft PM interview with a single product design question about building a platform for home chefs. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Design a platform for home chefs.

“I jumped straight into features and had to backtrack when they asked who exactly I was building for.”

Got a product design question for what seemed like a PM role at Microsoft. Just the one question, no context on round or outcome, so I'm filling in the blanks here.
  • How would you improve Slack?

“Classic competitor product question, which is a little awkward coming from Microsoft given they have Teams.”

Microsoft·Machine Learning Engineer·Hiring Manager Screen

Apr 2026
Microsoft ML Engineer interview where the hiring manager went through my resume and asked about ML-related experience. Some areas got a lot of scrutiny, others barely a mention.
  • Walk me through the ML-related parts of your resume and be ready to go deep on any of them.

“You never really know which projects they'll latch onto.”

Microsoft SWE interview with a calendar scheduling problem. Pretty standard coding round, nothing too wild, but the I/O format tripped me up more than the logic itself.
  • Given a list of existing non-overlapping calendar events, determine whether a new event can be added without overlapping any of them. Implement using standard input/output.

“The core logic isn't bad once you think about it as an interval overlap check.”

Apr 2026
Microsoft SWE interview with a system design/coding question on a time-based key-value store. Pretty focused session, one meaty problem with a clear optimal path if you know your binary search.
  • Design a time-based key-value store that supports storing multiple values per key at different timestamps, and retrieving the value associated with the largest timestamp that does not exceed a given query timestamp.

“The set operation was trivial since timestamps are guaranteed to be strictly increasing per key, so you just append.”

Microsoft·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Interviewed for a PM role at Microsoft and got a broad question about what makes someone genuinely good at product management across different teams and contexts. Not a lot of detail to go on from my end, but it was a real question that made me think harder than I expected.
  • What does it mean to be an excellent product manager, and how would you apply that across different teams or projects?

“I rambled a bit trying to cover everything at once, which was a mistake.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Microsoft onsite system design round for a software engineer role. One question, but it went deep fast and I was not prepared for how many layers they wanted to peel back.
  • Design a chatbot personalization and memory system that works with text only.

“I'd never actually designed anything like this so I just went with a retrieval-augmented approach and hoped for the best.”

Microsoft·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Microsoft PM interview that leaned heavily on a product design case set in a food delivery context, with the main question branching into a bunch of follow-ups on scope, platform choices, and device considerations. Pretty standard product sense round but the follow-ups moved fast.
  • You are the PM at a food delivery company like Swiggy. How would you design and launch a product specifically for restaurants?
  • What would be the MVP features for this restaurant product, and how did you decide what to cut?
  • Which platform would you build this on first, and why?
  • What device constraints or considerations would affect your design decisions for this product?

“This one has a lot of surface area and I think I spread myself too thin at first.”

Microsoft·Software Engineer·Online Assessment (OA)

May 2026
Microsoft SWE online assessment, one algorithmic problem that looks deceptively clean until you actually try to implement it efficiently. The core idea is straightforward but the efficient path took me a while to see.
  • Given a permutation of length n, an index k is called 'balanced' if some contiguous subarray contains exactly the elements {1, 2, ..., k}. For each k from 1 to n, output '1' if k is balanced and '0' otherwise.

“My first instinct was to just scan for each k and check all subarrays, which is obviously too slow.”
