Nuro·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Nuro software engineer interview with a concurrency-focused system design question. The problem was meaty enough that I kept second-guessing whether they wanted pseudocode or a full working implementation.
  • Design and implement a thread-safe periodic job scheduler that supports scheduling callbacks at a given frequency (in Hz) and cancelling them safely while a worker thread is running.

“This one took me a minute to even parse.”

Nuro·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

System design round at Nuro focused entirely on autonomous vehicle data infrastructure. One long question, lots of rabbit holes, and I left feeling like I'd only scratched the surface of what they actually wanted.
  • Design an on-vehicle data pipeline that handles downloading sensor, telemetry, and map data to a vehicle, processes it locally, and optionally uploads results back. Your design should address download scheduling across different connectivity types, incremental updates, on-device storage constraints, processing pipeline design, data integrity, and how the system scales across a fleet of vehicles with varied hardware.

“This one sprawls fast.”

Nuro·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Nuro interview that was more hands-on than I expected. They gave me a concurrent systems problem and wanted actual running code, not pseudocode or a whiteboard sketch.
  • Build a periodic job scheduler that takes a task function and a frequency in Hz, converts that to a time interval, and runs the task on that cadence. It needs a schedule(task, hz) and cancel(handle) API, must use separate threads for scheduling and execution, and has to actually run correctly with proper thread safety and clean shutdown.

“The part that tripped me up was the cancel logic.”

Nuro·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jun 2026
PM interview at Nuro with a product sense question set at SFO airport. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • You work at SFO airport and the CEO asks you to improve the passenger experience from car drop-off to boarding. What single recommendation would you make?

“Scoping this was harder than it sounds.”

Nuro·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Jun 2026
Nuro SWE coding round, one question the whole time. Pretty focused on concurrency which I wasn't fully expecting.
  • Design and implement a job scheduler that supports scheduling and descheduling tasks on one thread, while a separate thread handles executing those tasks.

“Classic concurrency problem but the two-thread constraint is what makes it interesting.”

Nuro·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Interviewed for an infrastructure role at NURO and got a parsing/string-processing problem that felt more like a backend scripting task than anything infra-specific. Not a bad question, just not what I expected.
  • Write a Python function that reads log lines formatted as `[I] timestamp, eventName, errorCode, text`, pulls out the errorCode from each line, and returns a dictionary mapping each errorCode to how many times it appears.

“Spent the first minute overthinking whether to use regex or just split on commas.”

Nuro·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

System design round at Nuro for a software engineering role. The whole session was basically one big webhook design question that kept expanding the more I answered, which was either fun or exhausting depending on how you look at it.
  • Design a webhook delivery system where clients register subscription endpoints and the system reliably sends event notifications via HTTP POST. Cover event ingestion, queueing, retries with backoff, idempotency, authentication, dead-letter queues, ordering vs throughput trade-offs, scaling delivery workers, and monitoring.

“This question kept growing.”

System design round at Nuro for a software engineering role. Just the one question, pub-sub, which sounds straightforward until you're actually in it trying to remember whether to lead with the producer side or the broker.
  • Design a publish-subscribe messaging system.

“I started with the broker and worked outward, which felt right at the time but I think I should've anchored on the use case first.”

Nuro·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Nuro ML engineer interview hit me with a concurrency system design problem that felt more like a backend SWE question than anything ML-related. The problem itself was well-scoped but the depth they expected on locking semantics was a bit of a surprise.
  • Design a thread-safe in-memory cache around an expensive compute function, where if two threads request the same missing key simultaneously, only one should execute the computation while the other waits and reuses the result. Walk through your locking strategy and how you'd handle exceptions from the compute function.

“This took me a minute to fully internalize.”

System design round at Nuro for a software engineer role, focused entirely on building a high-throughput log ingestion and search platform. Pretty deep dive, they clearly wanted to see if you'd thought about the full stack from ingest to query.
  • Design a log ingestion and search service that handles high-volume structured logs from many producers and supports near real-time querying.

“This one covers a lot of ground.”
