OpenAI·Backend Engineer·Recruiter / HR Screen

Apr 2026
Screener question for a backend role at OpenAI. Just the one motivational question from what I can tell, nothing technical yet.
  • What draws you to OpenAI specifically, and how does your background connect to the mission and this role?

“I had an answer ready but it felt a little rehearsed coming out.”

OpenAI·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
PM interview at OpenAI, one question focused entirely on how you'd measure the success of their search product. Pretty lean on context but the question itself had some depth to it.
  • How would you measure the success of ChatGPT Search, and what metrics would you prioritize?

“My first instinct was to go straight to engagement numbers, which felt a bit shallow in hindsight.”

OpenAI·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
System design round at OpenAI for a software engineer role. The whole session was basically one big Instagram design question that kept drilling deeper the longer I talked.
  • Design Instagram, with a focus on how you'd generate and deliver the feed.
  • How would you handle feed delivery for accounts that have millions of followers, like celebrities?
  • How do you scale database reads for the feed delivery layer?

“Started with the broad strokes: core components, how a post travels from upload to someone's feed, where you'd need to scale.”

OpenAI·Mobile Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Did a system design round for a mobile engineer role at OpenAI. The problem was interesting but had a lot of moving parts, and I wasn't totally sure how deep to go on each layer.
  • Design an API and mobile architecture to control and limit user access counts per model version in a ChatGPT-like product. When a user hits their limit, display a toast showing the wait time until next free access, and include a link to upgrade to paid. Cover endpoint design, mobile-side patterns, and function signatures.

“This one had more layers than I expected going in.”

OpenAI·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
System design round at OpenAI for a software engineering role. The whole session was focused on payment infrastructure, which sounds straightforward until you get to reconciliation and partial failures and realize you've been handwaving over the hard parts your whole career.
  • Design a payment system covering the full flow: initiation, authorization, capture, refunds, and idempotency. Security is out of scope. Place particular emphasis on how you reconcile your internal ledger against an upstream payment processor, how you detect and resolve mismatches, batch vs streaming reconciliation approaches, and how you handle partial failures and disputes.

“I started with the happy path, which felt fine, but the interviewer kept steering toward reconciliation and I could feel myself getting vague.”

OpenAI·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - Multi Round

Apr 2026
OpenAI deep-dives on a project you pick, and I mean deep. They want the full picture: why it existed, what you personally built, every design decision you considered and rejected, how you knew it was working, and what blew up along the way.
  • Walk me through a high-impact project you've worked on: what was the motivation, what were you personally responsible for, and what design decisions did you make along the way?
  • What alternatives did you consider when designing the system or model, and why did you go with the approach you chose?
  • How did you measure whether the project was successful?
  • What went wrong during the project, and what would you do differently if you started over?

“This is basically the whole interview compressed into one question.”

OpenAI·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Coding interview at OpenAI for a software engineer role. The environment itself caused more trouble than the actual problem, and I left wishing I'd figured out the tooling quirks before the clock started.
  • Solve the IP address parsing problem, including implementing CIDR block notation support.

“Made it to the third part (CIDR blocks) but the output was wrong and I didn't catch why until after the call ended.”

OpenAI·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - Multi Round

Apr 2026
Final round for an ML Engineer role at OpenAI. Two-part format: a 45-minute research presentation you pick yourself, followed by a string of 1:1s across different teams that felt like a mix of technical grilling and mutual vibe-checking. Pretty intense but structured enough that you can prepare for it.
  • Walk us through a research project of your choice: what motivated it, how you approached it, what the results were, and what you took away from it.
  • During the 1:1s, interviewers asked deep technical follow-ups on your presentation and past work. Be ready to defend design decisions and tradeoffs in detail.
  • Tell me about a time you had to navigate ambiguity on a project where requirements or goals weren't clearly defined.
  • What are you looking for in a team, and how do you think about team fit when evaluating opportunities?

“This is the centerpiece of the whole final round, 45 minutes, and they'll interrupt with technical questions throughout.”

OpenAI·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Interviewed for an ML engineer role at OpenAI and got a technical question about gradient descent and optimization in the context of linear regression. Pretty standard stuff but I fumbled parts of it under pressure.
  • How does gradient descent work in the context of optimizing a linear regression model?

“I knew the mechanics but started rambling about the loss surface before actually grounding it in the linear regression setup.”

Apr 2026
OpenAI HR screen, pretty standard stuff but with a few quirks worth knowing about before you go in.
  • Why do you want to work at OpenAI, and why are you looking to leave your current role?
  • Tell me about a time you made a significant impact in your work.
  • Describe a failure or setback and how you handled it.
  • What are your salary expectations?

“Pretty expected but I fumbled the 'why leave' part a bit.”
