OpenAI SWE coding round, one problem the whole session: build a type inference engine for a toy language. Sounds manageable until you're staring at nested generics and trying to remember how unification actually works under pressure.
  • Implement a type inference system for a toy language that supports primitives, generics, nested tuples, and function signatures. Start by implementing string representations for Node and Function types, then write a function that resolves a function's return type given concrete argument types by unifying generics and substituting them into the output type.

“This one took me longer than I expected to get fully right.”

Interviewed for a software engineer role at OpenAI and got a reliability/systems question about duplicate network requests. Short and focused, mostly one meaty design problem.
  • If the same network request is accidentally sent twice, how do you ensure it only gets processed once?

“Classic idempotency problem and I knew the concept but fumbled the specifics under pressure.”

OpenAI system design round focused on a follow graph with snapshot versioning. The core problem wasn't hard to set up but the trade-off discussion got pretty deep pretty fast.
  • You have a social graph with follow and unfollow operations. Add snapshot support so the system can record the state of the graph at a given point in time. Given a snapshot ID and two users A and B, determine whether A was following B at that snapshot.

“I started with the naive approach, full copy of the graph per snapshot, which works but blows up in space if you have millions of users and frequent snapshots.”

Interviewed for a software engineering role at OpenAI and got a problem that looked straightforward until I actually had to think about the edge cases. The IP address traversal question was the whole session, and it exposed some gaps in how I think about integer overflow at the byte boundary.
  • Given an IPv4 address and a count, generate the next N IPv4 addresses in ascending order, handling octet rollover correctly (e.g. 1.2.3.255 becomes 1.2.4.0).

“My first instinct was to split on dots and manually carry the overflow across octets, which works but the code got messy fast.”

Coding round at OpenAI for a software engineer role, heavy on concurrency. The whole thing was basically a deep dive into thread safety and synchronization primitives, which I wasn't expecting to be quite so thorough.
  • Implement a thread-safe bounded task queue that supports multiple producer and consumer threads with proper blocking semantics.
  • When would you choose a mutex versus a read/write lock versus a condition variable, and what are the tradeoffs?
  • How would you coordinate worker threads pulling tasks from a shared queue and implement a graceful shutdown mechanism?
  • What are common pitfalls in concurrent programming, such as deadlock, priority inversion, lost wakeups, and busy-waiting, and how do you avoid them?

“This was the main coding problem and it took up most of the session.”

OpenAI system design round, one big question about building a durable key-value store from scratch. The scope was wider than I expected and the disk-persistence angle made it feel less like a typical KV store question and more like a mini storage engine design.
  • Design a key-value store where data is sharded across multiple fixed-size files on disk. The system must support graceful shutdown (flush to disk durably) and restore on startup (reload state from disk). Serialization helpers are provided. Walk through shard selection, per-shard file format, shutdown consistency guarantees, and how you rebuild the in-memory index on restore.

“This one spiraled fast.”

One coding round at OpenAI for an ML Engineer role, two problems but the main event was a grid-based infection spread problem that's basically a BFS exercise if you've seen LeetCode 994 before.
  • Given an m x n grid where each cell is empty, a healthy person, or an infected person, infection spreads to 4-directional healthy neighbors every minute. Return the minimum number of minutes until no healthy person remains, or -1 if it's impossible.

“Multi-source BFS, which I knew going in, but I fumbled the -1 case for a solid two minutes.”

OpenAI interview that basically asked me to build a mini interpreter from scratch. One question, but it had a lot of moving parts and I wasn't totally prepared for how deep it went.
  • Design and implement a small toy language that supports node and function constructs. This includes defining the data structures for nodes and functions, specifying how functions are declared and called, and writing an evaluator that can interpret programs written in this language.

“I underestimated this at first.”

System design round at OpenAI for a software engineer role, focused entirely on designing a cloud-hosted remote IDE from scratch. The scope was massive and I felt the time pressure pretty hard toward the end.
  • Design a cloud-hosted remote IDE similar to GitHub Codespaces or Replit. Walk through the full system including workspace isolation, code editing, language tooling, terminal access, file sync, port forwarding, snapshotting, and cost-efficient scaling.

“This is a beast of a question.”

System design round at OpenAI covering a full-scale activity feed from scratch. The scope was massive and I think I only got through maybe 60% of what they wanted before time ran out.
  • Design a large-scale activity and news feed system similar to Facebook or Instagram, covering data modeling, feed generation, ranking, storage, pagination, deduplication, ads, multi-device sync, and scaling to billions of users.

“This question is basically a full system design career arc compressed into 45 minutes.”
