Pinterest·Software Engineer·Onsite - Multi Round

May 2026
Went through the full Pinterest onsite loop for a senior IC role, five rounds total covering system design, coding, and a competency interview. Most rounds felt solid but one system design round has me second-guessing myself because I missed a key piece of the problem early on. Waiting to hear back and genuinely unsure if the shaky HLD round tanks it.
  • System design: design a system that merges or unions data from two incoming queues.
  • System design: design a system where the database choice between SQL and NoSQL is a meaningful architectural decision.
  • Coding round: multi-part algorithmic problem (first session).
  • Coding round: multi-part algorithmic problem (second session), followed by a discussion about the scope and responsibilities of a senior engineer.
  • Competency / behavioral round: questions assessing leadership, past experience, and fit for the team's roadmap.

“This is the one that keeps me up at night.”

Pinterest DS interview with a deep product analytics question about ad load optimization in the home feed. Single question but it covered a ton of ground: experiment design, decision rules, segmentation, rollout. The kind of question where you realize halfway through you've been answering the easy parts and skipping the hard ones.
  • Pinterest is testing different ad loads (ads per 100 content units) in the home feed. Design a full analysis to determine whether the current ad load is optimized, covering: a success function that balances user experience and revenue, experiment design with randomization and interference mitigations, a formalized decision rule with statistical testing, heterogeneity analysis across user segments, and a phased rollout plan with monitoring.

“This one is massive.”

Pinterest system design round for a software engineering role. The whole session was basically one big question about catalog management infrastructure, which sounds contained until you realize how many moving parts they actually want you to cover.
  • Design a product catalog update service for merchants, covering single-item edits, bulk uploads up to a million rows, partial-success handling, and update history with rollback support.
  • How would you handle strong read-after-write consistency for a merchant's own catalog while allowing eventual consistency for search indexes and downstream systems?
  • Walk through the validation logic you'd apply to bulk product updates, including schema checks, inventory constraints, image URL verification, and price currency consistency.
  • What are the trade-offs between rejecting a bulk update on the first validation error versus processing all rows and returning a per-row success or failure report?
  • How would you design the system to handle mass discount events where a merchant needs to update prices across millions of SKUs with high throughput?

“This is a lot to hold in your head at once.”

Pinterest ML Engineer interview that went deep on model internals. The question about zero-valued parameters sounds deceptively simple but they really wanted you to distinguish between causes and know when zeroed weights are a problem versus a feature.
  • In a trained model, many parameters end up at or near zero. Walk through the different mechanisms that can cause this and explain how you'd figure out which one is actually responsible in a given situation. Also, when is having zeroed-out parameters a good thing versus a problem?

“This one tripped me up a bit because I jumped straight to L1 regularization and kind of stalled there.”

Pinterest·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Pinterest PM interview, one product design question, pretty standard stuff.
  • How would you improve Pinterest?

“Classic product sense question.”

Pinterest ML Engineer interview with a hard graph/BFS problem. The question was algorithmic and felt more like a software engineering screen than anything ML-specific, which threw me off a bit.
  • Given a list of bus routes where each bus cycles through its stops indefinitely, find the minimum number of buses you need to take to get from a source stop to a target stop. Return -1 if it's impossible.

“The instinct to BFS over stops instead of routes will burn you here.”

Pinterest MLE system design round focused entirely on building a CTR prediction system from scratch. Pretty deep dive, covered everything from feature stores to model architecture choices to serving infrastructure. Left feeling like I'd done okay on the ML side but probably rushed through the serving and experimentation bits.
  • Design an end-to-end ad click-through rate prediction system that takes a (user, ad, context) tuple at request time and returns a click probability used to rank candidate ads.
  • How would you construct training data for CTR prediction, and how do you handle the delayed feedback problem?
  • Walk through your feature engineering strategy: what user, ad, and context features would you use, and how would you handle cross features?
  • How do you ensure consistency between your offline training features and online serving features?
  • How would you set up the model serving infrastructure, including deployment strategies for safely rolling out new model versions?
  • What metrics would you use to evaluate the model offline versus online, and how do you reconcile a mismatch between the two?
  • How would you handle cold-start for new ads and new users in your CTR prediction system?
  • How would you approach exploration versus exploitation in ad ranking, and what are the tradeoffs?

“This is the whole interview, not just one question.”

Pinterest coding screen, one algorithmic problem the whole time. Clean problem statement but the O(n) constraint is where it gets real.
  • Given an array of positive integers and a value K, count the number of subarrays where the product of the subarray sum and its length is less than or equal to K.

“Took me longer than I'd like to admit to see why a sliding window works here.”

One coding question for a Pinterest MLE round, sliding window stuff. Pretty short session, nothing else to report.
  • Given an array and a window of size k, check whether each window's values form a pattern that decreases from the current element toward both ends (like a peak in the middle).

“Took me a minute to even visualize what they were asking.”

Pinterest data scientist interview with a coding question focused on hyperparameter grid search. The problem was more algorithmic than I expected for a DS role, and the follow-up discussion on scaling strategies caught me a bit flat-footed.
  • Write a generator function that yields every combination of values from a hyperparameter dictionary like {'learning_rate': [0.1, 0.2], 'feature': ['A', 'B'], 'batch': [10, 20]}. Then discuss what approaches exist to avoid combinatorial explosion when the grid gets very large.

“The generator part I got through fine, used itertools.product under the hood and wrapped it to yield dicts keyed by param name.”
