Pure Storage·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Pure Storage asked a geometry problem about counting squares from a set of 2D points, and the whole conversation was basically a walkthrough of three different algorithmic approaches back to back. Pretty focused technical screen, no fluff.
  • Given n 2D coordinates, count how many distinct squares can be formed using four of those points as corners. Walk through a brute-force solution, then optimize it step by step.

“Started with the O(n^4) brute-force which they expected, no issues there.”

Pure Storage·Software Engineer·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Pure Storage product marketing interview, one question that sounds breezy until you're actually in it trying to pick a product and defend every angle on the spot.
  • Pick a product you like and explain its value proposition, the customer segments it targets, and pitch a sample ad campaign for it.

“I picked something I use daily which felt smart but then I realized I'd never actually thought about its segments in a structured way.”

Pure Storage·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Pure Storage system design round, one meaty question about building an in-memory event dispatcher that spiraled into a pretty deep multithreading conversation. The design part felt manageable but the concurrency follow-ups were where things got uncomfortable fast.
  • Design an in-memory event dispatcher that supports subscribing listeners to event types, unsubscribing them, and firing events to invoke all registered listeners for a given type. Then discuss how your design holds up when all three operations can be called concurrently from multiple threads.

“Started fine with the basic API, subscribe/unsubscribe/fire with a map of event types to listener lists, nothing wild.”

Pure Storage coding round, one problem the whole session. The question was a geometry/hashing thing that looked deceptively clean but had some annoying edge cases around integer arithmetic.
  • Given a set of distinct points on a 2D plane, count how many squares can be formed using exactly four of those points as vertices. Squares can be axis-aligned or rotated at any angle.

“The key insight I kept circling around was treating each pair of points as a diagonal rather than a side.”

Pure Storage·Software Engineer·Hiring Manager Screen

Apr 2026
Interviewed at Pure Storage for what seemed like a sales or marketing role. Not a lot to go on from this one.
  • Which channels did you use to generate leads, and which ones performed best?

Pure Storage·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

May 2026
Pure Storage onsite coding round for a software engineer role. The structure was a base problem followed by a pile of multithreading follow-ups, which honestly felt like the real interview started after you thought you were done.
  • Given a single-threaded solution to a problem, how would you parallelize it? Walk through work splitting, result merging, and synchronization.
  • How do you reason about read-write contention, false sharing, and cache locality in a multithreaded program?
  • Describe producer-consumer patterns, thread pools, and how you'd handle back-pressure in a concurrent system.
  • How does throughput scale as you add more threads, and where does the bottleneck typically appear?

“They started with a pretty approachable base problem and then immediately asked me to parallelize it.”

Pure Storage·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Pure Storage system design round, pretty deep on the internals of a timer/scheduler system. The question had more moving parts than I expected and I spent way too long on the heap before they nudged me toward the concurrency angle.
  • Design a timer and event-scheduling system with a schedule(eventId, delayMs, callback) API and a cancel(eventId) method. Walk through the internal data structures, how the worker thread operates, and how you'd handle event ordering.
  • How would you handle time advancement in this system: real wall-clock time versus a simulated tick-based clock? What are the trade-offs and when would you use each?

“I went straight to the min-heap keyed on fire time, which was the right call, but I got too deep into heap implementation details before talking about the worker thread at all.”

Pure Storage·Product Manager·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Interviewed at Pure Storage for what seemed like a product or UX-adjacent role. Just one question from what was shared, but it was the kind that requires you to have a real story ready.
  • Tell me about a role where you had to influence the direction of software or UI design. What did you actually change or accomplish?

“I had a decent story but I buried the lead.”

Pure Storage coding screen, geometry problem, nothing too wild but it required more careful thinking than I expected going in.
  • Given four 2D points in no particular order, write a function that returns true if they form a valid square (all sides equal, all right angles) and false otherwise.

“I jumped straight to checking side lengths and forgot about the diagonal check.”

Pure Storage·Product Manager·Hiring Manager Screen

May 2026
Interviewed at Pure Storage for a product role. One question about churn, not much else to report.
  • How did you handle customer churn for a product you owned?

“I went straight into metrics and retention tactics but realized mid-answer I hadn't set up why churn was even a problem for that product.”
