Salesforce·AI Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
AI/ML fundamentals interview for an AI Engineer role at Salesforce covering a pretty wide range of topics, from classical ML metrics all the way through LLMs and production agent architecture. Felt more like a breadth check than a deep dive on any single area.
  • How do you choose between precision, recall, F1-score, and AUC when evaluating a classification model?
  • How do you decide whether a problem should be framed as classification versus regression?
  • How do you set up a proper benchmarking methodology when comparing ML models?
  • What techniques do you use to optimize model inference for latency and throughput in production?
  • How would you architect an AI agent as a production service?
  • Can you explain how the Transformer attention mechanism works and why it matters for LLMs?
  • How do you manage context windows effectively when working with LLMs in production?
  • How does retrieval-augmented generation work, and how do you ground LLM outputs to reduce hallucinations?

“This came down to knowing your use case.”

Salesforce system design round for a software engineer role. The question was a coffee ordering system, which sounds chill until you realize they want you to cover basically everything: APIs, data modeling, scaling, payments, real-time status updates. Pretty thorough for one question.
  • Design a coffee ordering system for a coffee shop or chain that handles browsing, ordering, customization, payment, and real-time status updates for customers and baristas.
  • How would you scale this system from a single store to many stores, given peak load of thousands of orders per minute?
  • How do you handle consistency and failure scenarios, like duplicate order submissions or retries in the payment flow?

“I started with the happy path (customer places order, barista sees it, status updates) and that was fine, but I underestimated how much they wanted to dig into the payment side.”

Salesforce solutions architect interview with a platform selection question centered on API-driven app development. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • How would you choose a platform for building an application that relies heavily on external APIs?

“I went straight into listing platforms and comparing them, which in hindsight was the wrong move.”

Jun 2026
Salesforce PM interview with a metrics diagnostic question about a significant retention drop. Pretty focused case, no fluff, just one meaty problem to work through.
  • Retention on a core Salesforce product dropped 35% recently. Walk through how you'd diagnose what happened.

“I went straight to segmentation which felt right in the moment but I skipped clarifying what 'retention' even meant to them and that came back to bite me.”

Salesforce software engineer interview that went deep into cloud infrastructure and Kubernetes. Pretty technical throughout, felt more like a staff-level system design session than a typical SWE screen. Walked away thinking I need to drill GCP-specific tooling more.
  • Compare VMs, containers, and serverless compute models on GCP and AWS. When would you pick each?
  • What strategies do you use to test cloud services, covering unit, integration, load, and chaos testing?
  • Walk me through the Kubernetes control plane versus worker nodes. What components live on each, and how do you use kubectl to deploy, scale, roll back, and debug a service?
  • How would you secure a multi-tenant Kubernetes cluster? Cover RBAC, network policies, secrets management, and encryption.
  • Design a CI/CD pipeline that builds, tests, scans, and deploys containerized services to GKE, including rollback support and canary releases.

“This one felt broad at first and I wasn't sure how deep to go.”

Salesforce SWE coding round with one fairly tricky string manipulation problem. The hint they gave about parity of character frequencies was actually useful but I didn't fully lean into it during the interview.
  • You have an array of n strings made up of lowercase letters. You can perform any number of operations where each operation swaps a single character between two different strings. What's the maximum number of strings that can be palindromes at the same time?

“Took me a while to see what the hint was pointing at.”

Salesforce SWE interview with a string manipulation problem. Pretty standard coding round, nothing too crazy, but the palindrome twist kept me second-guessing my edge cases the whole time.
  • Given a string, can you determine whether swapping exactly two of its characters (at most once) would make it a palindrome?

“My first instinct was to just check character frequencies and call it a day, but that's not quite right.”

Salesforce full-stack screen where they had me build a traffic light from scratch in plain HTML, CSS, and JS. No frameworks, no tricks, just the basics, but they kept piling on extensions throughout the session which is where things got interesting.
  • Build a working traffic light in vanilla HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Three lights, automatic cycling with realistic timing, only one active at a time.
  • Now add a manual override button that lets a user force a specific light on, and explain how you'd handle resuming the automatic cycle afterward.
  • Make the timing configurable, so different durations can be passed in without changing the core logic.
  • Add a pedestrian crossing signal that responds to the traffic light state, and describe how you'd keep the two in sync.
  • Add CSS fade transitions between light states instead of instant switching, and walk through any timing gotchas.
  • How would you refactor this into a React component or component-based architecture?

“The core part was fine.”

System design round at Salesforce for a software engineering role, focused entirely on building a movie recommendation system from scratch. Pretty broad scope for a single question but they clearly wanted to see how you'd structure ambiguity into something real.
  • Design a movie recommendation system end to end, covering everything from goal setting and data signals to modeling, evaluation, and rollout.

“This one sprawls fast if you're not careful.”

Salesforce SWE interview with a JSON flattening problem. Pretty much a pure coding round, one question, no system design or behavioral stuff from what I could tell. The problem itself was interesting but the edge cases are where things get tricky.
  • Given a nested JSON object (with arbitrary depth, containing objects and arrays), flatten it into a single-level key-value mapping and serialize it to a string. Keys should represent the full path using dot notation for object fields and bracket notation for array indices.

“I started with recursion and it worked fine for the basic cases.”
