Samsung·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Samsung ML engineer interview with a system design question around waste sorting using computer vision. Pretty applied, less abstract than I expected from a big tech company.
  • Design a system that automatically detects paper waste and sorts it into the correct bin.

“I jumped straight into the ML model part (image classification, maybe object detection) and spent way too long there before realizing they probably wanted the full pipeline: camera setup, inference latency, bin actuation, edge vs cloud tradeoff.”

Samsung·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Samsung research phone screen, first half was basically just a deep dive into my published papers. The interviewer had clearly done their homework, which was both reassuring and terrifying.
  • What motivated the research direction in your published work, and why did you frame the problem the way you did?
  • Walk me through the core technical contribution of your paper. What specifically did you design or derive that was novel?
  • Why did you make the specific methodological choices you did, and what alternatives did you consider?
  • How do you interpret your experimental results, and are there aspects of the evaluation you'd do differently now?
  • What are the limitations of your work, and where would you take it next?

“This one tripped me up more than it should have.”

Samsung·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Technical phone screen for a robotics engineer role, focused on a coding problem with an embedded systems twist. Needed hints to get to the right answer on the embedded part, which was a bit embarrassing but at least I got there.
  • Implement a solution to find the maximum area of an island (similar to LeetCode 695), but optimized for embedded systems constraints. What changes would you make to the standard approach?

“The base algorithm I knew fine, BFS or DFS on a grid, no problem.”

Samsung·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Samsung PM interview with a product analytics case about diagnosing a revenue drop on an e-commerce platform. Single question, pretty open-ended, felt like a structured problem-solving exercise more than a behavioral round.
  • Online orders on The New Yorker's platform have dropped 30%. How would you diagnose what's going wrong?

“I started by trying to segment the drop: is it traffic, conversion, or order completion?”

Samsung·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral round at Samsung, pretty open and conversational. Three big questions covering background, strengths, and a real weakness. Nothing tricky, just a lot of talking about yourself for an hour.
  • Walk me through your background: education, key roles, and what shaped your career path.
  • What are your top strengths, and can you give a concrete example of each one in action?
  • What is a genuine weakness you have, and what are you actually doing to work on it?

“I always fumble this one because I try to cover everything and end up rambling.”

Samsung·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Samsung data scientist interview with a meaty case question about sizing a retail parking lot. More open-ended than I expected, less coding, more structured thinking under pressure.
  • A big-box retailer wants to build a customer parking lot next to one of its stores. What data would you collect and how would you use it to recommend the right parking capacity?

“This one sprawled in every direction.”

Samsung·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Samsung Research Engineer interview had a long resume deep-dive section, roughly half an hour, with the interviewer jumping in constantly to probe design decisions and individual contributions. Be ready to defend every number you claim.
  • Walk me through your resume and past projects in detail.
  • Why did you make that specific technical or design choice in this project?
  • What was your individual contribution versus what the team did together?
  • What was the actual impact of this project and what metrics support that?
  • What did you learn from this project and what would you do differently?

“This ran way longer than I expected.”

Samsung·Machine Learning Engineer·Online Assessment (OA)

May 2026
Samsung ML Engineer interview with a classic dynamic programming problem. Nothing too wild, but it's the kind of question where you either see the pattern immediately or you sit there second-guessing yourself for five minutes.
  • Given an array of integers representing money at each house, find the maximum sum you can collect without picking from two adjacent houses.

“Classic house robber DP.”

Jun 2026
Samsung SWE interview with a tree/graph problem that had a bit of a twist to it. Not the hardest question on paper but the constraint they added made me rethink my whole approach mid-answer.
  • How would you implement a parent-child relationship to find the Least Common Ancestor (LCA) of a tree without using pointers?

“I went straight to the classic recursive LCA approach and then realized mid-explanation that pointers were off the table.”

Samsung·Software Engineer·Online Assessment (OA)

Jun 2026
Samsung coding screen, basically just the classic islands problem. Nothing fancy, no behavioral, straight into the algorithm.
  • Given a binary grid of 1s and 0s, count the number of islands, where an island is a group of adjacent land cells connected in four directions.

“Classic problem, knew it cold.”
