SoFi·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
SoFi software engineer interview with a sliding window problem that seemed straightforward until the follow-up questions started piling on. The core algorithm wasn't bad but the discussion around edge cases and extensions is where things got interesting.
  • Given a list of unsorted timestamps (in seconds) representing server requests, and a window length W, find the maximum number of requests that fall within any contiguous time window of length W. Return the count and optionally the start time of the best window.
  • How would you extend this solution to handle weighted requests, where each request has a different weight, and you want to maximize total weight within the window instead of count?
  • How would you adapt this approach for a streaming setting where timestamps arrive online and you can't sort them in advance?

“Sort first, then two pointers.”

SoFi·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
SoFi software engineer interview with a graph traversal problem that sounds deceptively simple until you're actually implementing it. The problem was framed as a choose-your-own-adventure story, which was a cute wrapper but made it easy to overthink the structure.
  • Given a choose-your-own-adventure story represented as a graph of choices and options, find all endings reachable from the starting node by following valid paths through the graph.

“The story framing threw me off for a second.”

SoFi·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
System design round at SoFi for a software engineer role. The whole thing was one big open-ended question about building a random number generation service, and it went in way more directions than I expected.
  • Design a large-scale service that exposes both REST and streaming endpoints for generating random numbers. Walk through the API contracts and versioning strategy, your choice of entropy sources and whether you'd use a cryptographically secure PRNG or a standard one, how seeding and reproducibility work, rate limiting and quotas, multi-tenant isolation, security and abuse prevention, observability, deployment and scaling, and your SLA targets for latency and availability.

“This was basically a whole system design interview packed into one question.”

SoFi·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
System design round at SoFi for a software engineer role, focused almost entirely on scaling a key-value store. It went deep fast and I was not fully prepared for how many sub-topics they'd pull out of one question.
  • How would you scale a single-server key-value store across many servers using consistent hashing? Walk through client routing, virtual nodes, and what happens when nodes join or leave.
  • What replication strategy would you use, and how do you pick quorum values for reads and writes?
  • How does failure detection work in your design, and what triggers re-replication and recovery?
  • How would you handle hot keys and load skew in the cluster?
  • How do you safely migrate data during rebalancing, and what monitoring and rollback mechanisms would you put in place?
  • How would you do rolling upgrades across the cluster without downtime?
  • Compare consistent hashing against a directory service or range partitioning. Why would you pick one over the others?

“I started with the ring diagram, which felt safe, and explained how virtual nodes help smooth out uneven distribution.”

SoFi·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
System design round at SoFi for a software engineer role. One meaty question that covered a lot of ground, from ingestion to fan-out to retry logic. Felt like a senior-level bar even if the title didn't say so explicitly.
  • Design a system that notifies users when market prices change for the symbols they're tracking. Users have watchlists, you have access to a third-party data vendor with both REST and WebSocket APIs, and you need to push near-real-time alerts via mobile, email, or in-app notifications.

“This question has a lot of layers and I kind of learned that the hard way.”

SoFi·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
System design round at SoFi for a software engineer role, focused entirely on distributed failure detection. One long open-ended question that branched into a bunch of sub-topics. Felt like I was being tested on breadth as much as depth.
  • You have a large cluster of nodes. Design a system where nodes can detect whether their peers are alive. You pick the protocol. Walk through the trade-offs between heartbeat, gossip, and a centralized coordinator, how you'd distinguish real failures from network partitions, false positive and negative trade-offs, scalability concerns, and how failure information gets propagated across the cluster. Reference specific schemes like SWIM or Raft-style coordination where relevant.

“This one sprawled.”

SoFi·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral round at SoFi for a software engineer role, pretty much all leadership and influence questions. Nothing technical, just the standard 'tell me about a time you...' format the whole way through.
  • Tell me about a time you led a team or initiative. How did you set direction, keep people motivated, handle disagreements, and get to the outcome?

“This is basically four questions rolled into one and I kind of forgot the disagreement part until the interviewer prompted me.”

SoFi·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral round at SoFi for a software engineer role. Just the one question about operational challenges and process improvement, which sounds straightforward until you're actually in it trying to remember a story that doesn't make you look incompetent.
  • Tell me about a time you faced an operational challenge or led a process improvement. Walk through the situation, what you did, the trade-offs you considered, and the result.

“The trade-offs part is what tripped me up.”

Jun 2026
Coding round at SoFi for a software engineer role. One algorithmic problem, fairly meaty, and the naive solution is easy to see but the efficient one takes some real thought.
  • You have a binary string of '0's and '1's. Every second, every adjacent '01' pair swaps simultaneously to '10'. How many seconds until the string stabilizes into all 1s before all 0s? Can you do better than a naive O(n²) simulation?

“I got the brute-force simulation pretty fast, just model each step and count.”

SoFi·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Day 2 of the SoFi Software Engineer loop was a behavioral round with a manager from the same org. Just the one question but it had some weight to it.
  • Tell me about a time you failed or missed a deadline. How did you handle communicating that to your stakeholders?

“The failure part was easy enough to talk through.”
