Sybill·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Interviewed for a software engineer role at Sybill and got hit with a classic shuffle problem. Seemed straightforward but the follow-up on uniformity and complexity analysis is where it gets interesting.
  • Write an in-place shuffle function in JavaScript that produces a uniformly random permutation of an array. It should run in O(n) time with O(1) extra space, handle edge cases like empty or single-element arrays, and you should be able to justify why it's unbiased.

“I knew Fisher-Yates going in so the code itself came out fine.”

Interviewed for a software engineering role at Sybill and got hit with a statistics-heavy question I wasn't expecting from a coding round. Not a bad experience, just not what I'd prepped for.
  • How would you design an experiment to verify that an array shuffling function is truly random? Walk through your hypotheses, choice of statistical tests, sample size, significance level, and how you'd implement and automate this in JavaScript.

“This one threw me.”

Sybill·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Interviewed for a software engineer role at Sybill. The whole thing was basically one big open-ended project deep-dive plus a chance to ask questions back, which sounds relaxed until you're actually in it trying to remember why you made that one architectural call two quarters ago.
  • Walk me through a recent project from start to finish: what were the goals, what was your role, what design decisions did you make, what was the tech stack, how did you measure success, what challenges came up, what trade-offs did you navigate, and what were the outcomes? Also, what would you do differently?
  • What questions do you have for us about the role, the team, the product roadmap, and the company?

“This is the question that sounds easy and then you realize you have no idea where to start.”
