Jun 2026
TikTok software engineer interview with two coding problems back to back. Pretty standard algorithmic stuff but the island problem tripped me up more than I expected.
  • Given a list of intervals, merge all overlapping intervals and return the result.
  • Given a 2D grid, count the number of distinct islands where two islands are considered the same if one can be translated to match the other.

“Sorted by start time first which is the obvious move, then iterated through comparing end times.”

TikTok·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Jun 2026
TikTok software engineer coding round, three algorithmic problems back to back. The tree one at the end was rough and I don't think I fully nailed the complexity analysis.
  • Given an integer array and a target value, find all unique triplets that sum to the target. Walk through an O(n^2) solution using sorting and two pointers, and explain how you handle duplicates.
  • Given an array of integers and a value k, return the k most frequent elements. If two elements share the same frequency, return the higher-valued one first. Use an O(n log k) approach with a min-heap.
  • You have a complete binary tree stored as an array where each node has a non-negative cost. You can increment any node's cost by 1. What is the minimum number of total increments so that every root-to-leaf path has the same sum?

“Classic 3Sum variant.”

TikTok·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
TikTok data scientist interview that was basically one long scenario question about multi-arm testing across acquisition channels. Dense, technical, and they clearly wanted to see if you could hold the whole thing together from metric definition all the way through post-hoc analysis.
  • You have four acquisition channels (YouTube, Google Search, Facebook, direct mail) and a fixed marketing budget. How would you design a multi-arm experiment to compare cost-per-conversion efficiency across all four? Walk through your metric definition, hypotheses, statistical test choice, sample size and budget split, test duration, and any follow-up analyses you'd run after the main result.

“This is a lot to hold in your head at once and I kind of fumbled the ordering.”

TikTok data scientist interview that went deep on regularization theory. One question but it had three sub-parts and each one could've been its own conversation. Felt like a stats PhD oral exam more than a typical DS screen.
  • You have two nearly identical standardized predictors (correlation = 0.99), and you're given the X'X matrix and X'y vector. First, compute the ridge regression weights for a given lambda and explain why L2 regularization distributes weight across correlated features. Second, without solving LASSO explicitly, argue what coefficient pattern L1 regularization would likely produce under high collinearity and why. Third, propose an elastic-net setup with specific alpha and lambda values that balances sparsity with variance control, and explain how you'd tune those and which validation metric fits if you care about sparse models with minimal PR-AUC loss.

“This wrecked me a little.”

TikTok·Data Scientist·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral round at TikTok for a data scientist role. One question, but it was basically six questions stapled together, and I did not feel great walking out.
  • Walk me through a project you owned end-to-end that actually changed a product decision. Cover: how you defined success for an ambiguous problem, the riskiest assumption you tested and when, a pivot you made based on new data, a high-stakes disagreement and how you got alignment, trade-offs you made under constraints, and what you'd do differently starting fresh today.

“This is a monster of a question.”

TikTok·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jun 2026
PM interview at TikTok with a metrics question focused on their customer service platform. Pretty standard product sense round but the constraint of picking exactly five forces you to actually prioritize instead of just listing everything.
  • If you could choose 5 metrics to measure the health of TikTok's customer service platform, what would they be and why?

“The 'pick exactly five' constraint is sneaky because it forces real tradeoffs.”

Conceptual deep-dive round at TikTok focused entirely on Java concurrency internals. No coding, just talking through how things work under the hood, which sounds easier than it is when someone keeps asking follow-up questions.
  • Walk me through how ConcurrentHashMap works internally and how it handles concurrent access. How does it compare to HashMap and Collections.synchronizedMap?
  • Explain how ConcurrentLinkedQueue, LinkedBlockingQueue, and ArrayBlockingQueue work internally. What are the concurrency mechanisms behind each, and when would you actually use one over the others?

“I started with the segment locking from older Java versions and then tried to pivot to the CAS-based approach in Java 8 but fumbled the explanation of how bin-level synchronized blocks interact with the tree conversion at high load.”

TikTok·Software Engineer·Onsite - Multi Round

Jun 2026
TikTok design-heavy interview that felt more like a portfolio review than a typical engineering screen. Three big questions, all interconnected, and the handoff one is where I probably lost points.
  • Walk through your portfolio and pick two projects that best represent how you approach design problems.
  • Describe your design language: what principles guide it, what patterns you rely on, and why you made those choices. How do you keep things consistent when you're working across multiple surfaces?
  • How do you get your designs actually shipped given real engineering and product constraints? Walk through your handoff process, what artifacts you produce, and how you collaborate with engineers.

“I overprepared for this and somehow still fumbled the delivery.”

TikTok·Product Manager·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
TikTok PM interview with a surprisingly algorithmic problem, which felt a bit out of left field for a product role. The question was more CS-flavored than anything I'd prepped for.
  • You're given a palindromic string of lowercase letters. Replace exactly one character so the result is no longer a palindrome and is the lexicographically smallest string possible. Return the new string, or an empty string if it's impossible. Walk through your algorithm, edge cases like single-character strings, and the time and space complexity.

“Took me a moment to even accept this was the question in a PM interview.”

TikTok data engineering interview with a deep dive into a past project. One question but it had a lot of surface area, basically a full debrief on something you'd actually built.
  • Walk me through a data-heavy project from your background. Cover the goals, what you personally owned, the tech stack, the shape and scale of the data, any problems you ran into like quality issues or latency, the calls you made, and what the actual results looked like.

“This one sprawls.”
