TikTok·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jul 2026
TikTok PM interview with a classic optimal stopping problem, dressed up in a fancy island metaphor. Two parts to the question and the second one is where things get interesting.
  • You're on an island with 100 rooms, each holding one painting. You can visit rooms in any order but can't go back, and you can take at most one painting, choosing on the spot. What strategy gives you the best expected value from the painting you end up with?
  • Now suppose you get nothing unless you pick the single most valuable painting out of all 100. How does your strategy change?

“I knew this was the secretary problem the second they said it.”

TikTok data engineer interview with a classic backtracking problem. Not much context given but the N-Queens question was the whole show, so I'm guessing this was a technical phone screen or OA-style round.
  • Print all possible solutions to the N-Queens problem.

“I knew the problem but froze a bit on the 'print all solutions' part because I'd only ever coded the 'count solutions' version before.”

TikTok·Software Engineer·Recruiter / HR Screen

Jul 2026
Screened for a software engineering role at TikTok and the questions leaned heavily toward design background and career narrative, which felt a bit off for an SWE role. Pretty standard recruiter-style conversation, nothing technical at all.
  • Why did you decide to pursue design as a field?
  • What are your longer-term career goals?
  • Walk me through your most recent internship, the specific problems you worked on, how you approached them, and any measurable results.
  • Tell me about a time you disagreed with a teammate or stakeholder. What happened and how did it resolve?
  • What do you hope to get out of this internship?
  • When can you start, what is your expected graduation date, and what is your work authorization status?

“Weird question for an SWE screen but I just rolled with it.”

TikTok·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jul 2026
TikTok software engineer interview covering core CS fundamentals. Nothing too exotic but the breadth was real, they moved fast through topics and expected clean answers without a lot of hand-holding.
  • What is the difference between a process and a thread?
  • How does a thread pool work? Walk through the task queue, worker lifecycle, and what happens when the pool is saturated.
  • Name the four conditions required for deadlock and explain how you'd prevent it.
  • Describe the TCP three-way handshake and the connection teardown sequence.
  • Explain the Java Memory Model's happens-before guarantees. How do volatile and synchronized ensure visibility and ordering?

“Pretty standard opener.”

TikTok·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Jul 2026
TikTok software engineer coding round, two algorithmic questions back to back. Nothing too exotic but the complexity analysis follow-ups were where things got real.
  • You're given a list of closed-open time intervals representing meetings on a single calendar. Find the minimum number of rooms needed so no two overlapping meetings share a room. Walk through your algorithm, justify the time and space complexity, and explain how you'd scale it for very large inputs.
  • Given the root of a binary tree, write an algorithm to check whether it is a complete binary tree. Cover the complexity, edge cases, and what test cases you'd write.

“Classic meeting rooms problem but they pushed hard on the 'very large inputs' part.”

TikTok·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jul 2026
TikTok ML engineer interview that went pretty deep into algorithmic problem-solving. The whole session was basically one big subarray sum problem broken into escalating parts, and they wanted proofs, edge case analysis, and trade-off discussion on top of working code.
  • Given an integer array and a target value, write a function that returns true if any non-empty contiguous subarray sums to the target. Aim for O(n) time.
  • Extend the previous solution to count how many contiguous subarrays sum to the target, still in O(n) time.
  • Assuming all numbers in the array are non-negative, design an O(n) time, O(1) space method to find one contiguous subarray that sums to the target. Return the start and end indices. Then explain how you'd adapt it to count all such subarrays.
  • Walk through the edge cases across all three parts: arrays with zeros, negative numbers, and very large inputs. How do the different approaches handle them?

“Prefix sums with a hash set, pretty standard.”

TikTok·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jul 2026
Interviewed for a PM role at TikTok and got a product critique question that sounds deceptively easy until you're actually sitting there trying to say something smart about an app you use every day.
  • What are the biggest pain points in one of TikTok's core products, from the company's perspective?

“I went in thinking this was a softball and came out feeling like I'd fumbled it.”

TikTok·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Jul 2026
PM interview at TikTok focused on product strategy for TikTok Shop, specifically around using discovery and search features to drive user acquisition. Pretty lean on details but the core question was meaty enough to chew on for a while.
  • How would you use discovery features like search to grow the user base for TikTok Shop?

“I went straight to search intent as a signal for purchase readiness, which felt right but I think I underplayed the social discovery angle that makes TikTok actually different from other e-commerce platforms.”

TikTok SWE coding round, just one linked list problem. Pretty standard stuff but worth knowing cold if you're prepping.
  • Given the heads of two singly linked lists, write a function that finds and returns the node where the two lists intersect, if one exists.

“Classic problem.”

TikTok·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Jul 2026
TikTok data scientist interview that went deep into causal inference territory. The main question was a sprawling DiD design problem covering staggered rollouts, estimator choice, inference, and reconciliation with PSM. Felt more like a methods exam than a conversation.
  • You're running a staggered rollout across 50 regions over roughly 10 weeks with weekly revenue per user as your outcome. Design a difference-in-differences analysis that holds up under heterogeneous treatment effects. Walk through when two-way fixed effects is biased, what it actually identifies, and how you'd implement a Callaway-Sant'Anna or Sun-Abraham estimator including group-time ATTs and aggregation weights. Also cover the event-study setup, pre-trend testing with a joint F-test, inference under few clusters, and how you'd reconcile your DiD results with a parallel PSM analysis.

“This was basically six questions stapled together and I definitely felt the seams.”
