Uber·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Uber system design round, just the one question but it took the whole session. Classic ride-sharing design problem that sounds straightforward until you're actually in it.
  • Design the Uber platform end to end.

“I jumped straight into the matching service and kind of forgot to scope the problem first.”

Interviewed for an EM role at Uber, just one question worth noting from what I remember.
  • Why do you want to work at Uber?

“Pretty standard opener but I fumbled it more than I expected.”

Uber·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Interviewed for a program manager role at Uber. One behavioral question that sounds easy until you're actually sitting there trying to remember a real example that doesn't make you look bad.
  • Tell me about a time a stakeholder gave you a suggestion that didn't really add value. How did you handle it and what did you do to keep the project moving?

“I fumbled the opening on this one.”

Behavioral round at Uber for a security engineer role. Just one question from what I can tell, but it was the kind that sounds easy and then you realize mid-answer you have no idea what you're actually saying.
  • Tell me about a time you influenced a team that wasn't under your direct authority.

“I had a decent example ready but I spent too long on the setup and barely got to what I actually did.”

Uber SWE coding round, one algorithmic problem that looks simple but requires a clean insight to get right. Not a brutal interview but the kind where you either see it or you don't.
  • Given a permutation of integers 1 to n, determine for each value k (from 1 to n) whether there exists a contiguous subarray that is exactly a permutation of 1 to k. Output 1 if yes, 0 if no, for each k.

“My first instinct was to brute force check all subarrays for each k and I started explaining that before catching myself.”

Uber·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Uber system design round for a software engineering role. The question was a meeting room reservation system, which sounds straightforward until you actually have to think through concurrency and cancellations under pressure.
  • Design a meeting room reservation system with a fixed set of rooms. Implement a reserve(start, end) method that returns a unique meeting ID if a room is free for the entire interval, or signals failure if none are available. Walk through your data structures, discuss thread-safety, and explain how you'd extend the API to support cancellations and lookups.

“I started with a per-room sorted list of intervals and binary search to find gaps, which felt reasonable.”

Uber SWE coding round, one main problem with a follow-up on data structures. They also made me write my own test cases which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Design a system to schedule meetings, then optimize it using an appropriate data structure.
  • Write your own test cases for the meeting scheduler and walk through edge cases.

“Started fine but didn't reach for a TreeMap on my own.”

Behavioral round at Uber for a software engineering role. The interviewer kept pushing deeper into my project work, specifically around data streaming and the design rules baked into the system. Not the usual surface-level BQ stuff.
  • Walk me through a project you worked on that involved data streaming. How did it work and what design rules did you put in place?

“They kept following up.”

Uber SWE interview with a classic dynamic programming problem. Nothing too exotic but you really do need to have the DP formulation clean in your head before you walk in.
  • Given a knapsack with a fixed weight capacity and a set of items each having a weight and a value, find the combination of items that maximizes total value without exceeding the capacity.

“Classic 0/1 knapsack.”

Uber·Backend Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Uber backend round, object-oriented design for a parking lot. Felt manageable at first but the concurrency and extensibility parts caught me flat-footed near the end.
  • Design and implement an object-oriented model for a parking lot with multiple levels, spot size categories, vehicle types, and a full park/leave/query API.
  • How would you search for the next available spot efficiently across levels and spot types?
  • Two vehicles arrive at the same level simultaneously. How do you ensure a spot is assigned atomically without double-booking?
  • How would you extend this design to support EV charging spots, reservations, and license-plate-based entry and exit?
  • How do you model the pricing policy so that different spot types can have different hourly rates and a minimum charge?

“I started with the class hierarchy and it went fine, Vehicle and Spot and Ticket are all pretty natural.”
