Apr 2026
Wayfair ML engineer interview with a case study on post-purchase email recommendations. Not much else shared but that question alone was enough to keep me busy.
  • Design a post-purchase recommendation system delivered via email to customers.

“This is the kind of question where you can go in a hundred directions and none of them feel complete.”

ML system design round at Wayfair for an MLE role. One question, pretty open-ended, about ranking UI sections on a product page.
  • On an e-commerce product page, there are multiple content rows like 'Compare Similar Items', '4 Stars and Above', 'Frequently Bought Together', etc. How would you design a system to rank the order in which these rows are shown to users?

“This is the kind of question that feels deceptively scoped at first.”

Wayfair·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Wayfair data scientist case interview, product analytics flavor with a customer support dataset. Five-part question covering insights, recommendations, prioritization, measurement, and statistical risks. Felt more like a take-home prompt read aloud than a live conversation, but the depth they expected was real.
  • Given a customer support dataset with complaints, resolutions, and ratings tables, what are three data-driven insights you would look for, and what three recommendations would follow from them?
  • Of your three recommendations, which would you prioritize first and why?
  • How would you measure success after rolling out your prioritized recommendation? Walk through your primary metrics, guardrail metrics, and your choice of experimental design.
  • What confounding factors, selection biases in the ratings data, and implementation risks would you flag for this analysis?

“I went straight for the obvious ones: escalation rate by issue type, average resolution time vs.”

May 2026
Interviewed for a PM role at Wayfair, got a product sense question about marketplace apps. Short and straightforward, not much else to report.
  • What is your favorite marketplace app and why?

“Makes sense they'd ask this given Wayfair is basically a marketplace.”

May 2026
Wayfair PM interview with a product strategy question about whether to build a reviews feature. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Does Wayfair need a reviews feature, and if yes, how would you design and build it?

“I went straight to 'yes obviously' without really justifying it, which felt sloppy in retrospect.”

May 2026
Wayfair PM interview focused entirely on the reviews feature, from justifying its existence to building out a roadmap and measuring success. Pretty open-ended throughout, which I was not expecting.
  • Does Wayfair need a reviews feature at all, and why?
  • As the PM for reviews, how would you decide what goes into your roadmap?
  • How would you measure whether the reviews feature is successful?
  • What hypotheses do you have for improving the reviews feature?
  • What levers can you pull to improve the quality of reviews?

“This opener tripped me up more than it should have.”

Round 3 at Wayfair for an MLE role was a Python coding question on multi-armed bandits. Not a lot of detail to share but it was clearly testing applied ML knowledge under pressure.
  • Implement a multi-armed bandit algorithm in Python.

“This is the kind of question where you either know the exploration-exploitation tradeoff cold or you fumble around explaining epsilon-greedy while the interviewer watches.”

May 2026
Interviewed for a PM role at Wayfair, pretty short session from what I remember. Just one question that stumped me more than I expected.
  • Can you name three endpoints on Wayfair's platform?

“Blanked a little on this.”

Wayfair·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Wayfair engineering manager interview with a system design question focused on location-aware services. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Design a check-in service where users are automatically checked out once they move outside a defined geographic boundary.

“I went straight to the geofencing logic and spent probably too long on the proximity detection piece before anyone asked about it.”

Jun 2026
Wayfair PMM interview with a single case-style question about moving a traditional rug retailer into ecommerce. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • How would you design a go-to-market strategy for taking a brick-and-mortar rug store online?

“I started with customer segmentation and worked toward channel selection, but I think I got too deep into the logistics side and forgot to talk about positioning and messaging, which is kind of the whole point for a PMM role.”
