Zoox ML Engineer interview had at least one math-heavy question that felt more like a physics class than a machine learning screen. Not bad, just unexpected.
  • Sphere A has radius r and Sphere B has a radius 50% larger. Given the volume of A, calculate the volume of B by hand and explain why volume scales as the cube of the radius.

“I knew the cube relationship but fumbled spelling out 1.5 cubed cleanly without a calculator.”

Zoox data scientist interview with a rapid-fire brainteaser round covering estimation, probability, geometry, and a classic physics puzzle. The pace was relentless and the questions jumped around a lot, but the interviewers seemed more interested in how you think than whether you land the exact number.
  • A floor is 15 ft by 20 ft and you're covering it with square tiles that each have an area of 1 square yard. About how many tiles do you need?
  • An account starts with $1,000 and doubles every year. How much is in it after 20 years?
  • Using back-of-the-envelope reasoning, estimate the distance from Earth to the Moon. State your assumptions.
  • A boat floats in a lake with stones in it. You throw the stones overboard into the lake. Does the water level rise, fall, or stay the same?
  • Each of two boxes contains cards labeled 1, 2, and 3. You draw one card from each box at random. What's the probability that the product of the two cards is even?
  • Roughly how many uncompressed 1080p movies fit on a 2 TB hard drive? State your assumptions about frame rate, color depth, movie length, and how you define TB.
  • Three squares are nested concentrically, with each inner square formed by connecting the midpoints of the sides of the one around it. If the innermost square has area A, what is the area of the outermost square?

“Units trip you up here if you're not careful.”

A one-hour data modeling round at Zoox for a Data Engineer role. The scenario was pretty involved: autonomous robotaxis, teleoperators monitoring multiple vehicles at once, and a queue-based help system when a robot gets stuck. The whole task was designing a data model to track how well the teleops function is actually working.
  • You're building a data model to monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of a teleoperations function for an autonomous robotaxi service. Teleoperators handle a queue of stuck-vehicle events at a 1-to-many ratio. What does that model look like?

“This is the kind of question where the first five minutes really matter and I spent them going too broad.”

Zoox ML engineer interview that went deeper than I expected. Started as a standard coding question and turned into a full concurrency design problem. The skeleton they gave you was both helpful and slightly disorienting because you had to figure out what they actually wanted filled in.
  • You know the classic single buy/sell stock profit problem. Now imagine the prices array is massive. How would you parallelize the solution across K contiguous chunks, and how do you merge the results correctly at the end?

“The per-chunk local computation part I got fine, min price, max price, best profit within the chunk.”

Zoox·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Zoox system design round for a software engineer role. The question was a full OOP design problem with a real design decision baked in, not just 'draw some boxes.' Came away feeling okay about it but I definitely could have structured the trade-off discussion better.
  • Design an object-oriented Roller Coaster system that supports multiple coaster types (Wooden, Steel, Inverted, Hyper, etc.) and multiple scoring strategies based on attributes like speed, height, length, and thrill rating. Walk through your class structure and key methods, and discuss the trade-offs between putting scoring logic directly in the class hierarchy versus decoupling it with a Strategy pattern.

“I went straight for inheritance because it felt natural, had a base RollerCoaster class and overrode a score() method in each subclass.”

Zoox·Data Scientist·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral round for a Data Scientist role at Zoox, focused heavily on how you handle technical disagreements with stakeholders. One meaty question that took up most of the time.
  • Tell me about a time you and a stakeholder had a serious disagreement about how to frame or interpret a technical problem, like a stats assumption or a research design choice. What exactly did you disagree on, what evidence did each side have, and how did you work toward a resolution? Walk through your decision process, any escalation, risks you took on, and what actually happened. Quantify the impact if you can. Looking back, what would you do differently?

“This one went long.”

Apr 2026
Data architecture round at Zoox for a Data Engineer role, one hour, focused entirely on pipeline design for an autonomous vehicle use case. Pretty specialized stuff, not your typical ETL walkthrough.
  • Design a data pipeline to measure vehicle stability.

“This one took me a minute to even figure out where to start.”

Data engineering interview at Zoox focused on SQL-based data quality checks for transactional data. One open-ended question but it had a lot of layers to it, felt more like a mini case study than a typical SQL round.
  • What data quality checks would you add to a transactions and vendors table? Walk through potential edge cases or anomalies, propose five checks, and write SQL for two of them.

“The 'five checks' constraint was actually useful because it forced me to think beyond the obvious.”

Zoox data engineer interview had a one-hour math and brainteaser round. Nothing too crazy but it felt more like a quant screen than something you'd expect for a data engineering role.
  • Why is it hotter in summer than in winter?
  • If you invest $1,000 at a 100% annual interest rate, how much would you have after 20 years?

“Thought I had this one but then started second-guessing myself mid-answer.”

SQL technical screen for a Data Engineer role at Zoox. Just one question from what I can tell, but it was a real query with specific filtering logic and expected output, not a vague 'write me some SQL' prompt.
  • Using a transactions table, write a query to find the top 3 vendors by total amount charged over the last 2 years.

“Pretty clear what they wanted once I saw the table structure.”
