Airbnb·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Went into an Airbnb technical interview expecting DSA after the recruiter specifically said to prep for that, and got something completely different. They showed existing Python classes and asked me to extend them, which I hadn't touched in a while. Ran out of time and didn't make it through.
  • Given a set of existing Python classes with methods, write a new class that extends the functionality with an additional method.

“This is where it fell apart for me.”

Airbnb system design round focused entirely on offline-capable reservation systems. Dense question, lots of moving parts, left the room not totally sure I covered everything they wanted.
  • Design an offline-capable reservation feature for a mobile/web app. Cover what gets stored in IndexedDB, how a Service Worker intercepts network requests, background sync and retry logic, cache versioning and invalidation, conflict resolution on reconnect, security concerns like encryption at rest and key management, token refresh, PII minimization, and XSS/CSRF protections. Also describe how you'd test and audit the whole thing.

“This was basically five questions stapled together.”

Airbnb system design round, calendar service question. Pretty deep scope and I underestimated how much the timezone and recurrence stuff would dominate the conversation.
  • Design a calendar service similar to Google Calendar, covering event management, recurring events, invitations, multiple calendars, sharing permissions, reminders, and search.
  • How would you handle free/busy aggregation across users for scheduling, and what consistency guarantees would you provide?
  • Walk through how you'd design the notification and reminder dispatch system to ensure low-latency delivery.
  • How would you approach CalDAV or sync API compatibility for external calendar clients?

“I started with the event store and CRUD flows which felt safe, but the interviewer kept pushing on recurrence expansion and I fumbled it a bit.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral round at Airbnb for a SWE role. Just the one question shared, but it's the kind that sounds easy until you're actually in the seat trying to think of a good story.
  • Tell me about a time you had to deliver bad news to someone.

“I froze for a second because all my go-to stories are about technical wins, not uncomfortable conversations.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Airbnb senior engineering interview focused heavily on a leadership-oriented project deep-dive. The bar for what counts as 'senior scope' felt real and the probing was relentless.
  • Walk me through a major project from your resume, focusing on the leadership aspects: scope of impact, cross-team influence, decisions you owned, how you got others on board, and what the measurable outcome was.

“The part I underestimated was how hard they'd push on whether the scope was actually senior-level.”

System design round at Airbnb focused on notification infrastructure. The scope was pretty wide and the scale requirement made it more interesting than the usual 'design a notification service' prompt you see everywhere.
  • Design a notification system for Airbnb that supports both single event-triggered notifications and bulk/batch sends, across multiple channels like SMS, push, email, and social posts, at Airbnb scale. Consider use cases like booking confirmation emails, promotional messages to hosts, and SMS lock codes to guests.

“The multi-channel part is where I spent most of my time and probably where I fumbled a bit.”

Airbnb SWE interview with a two-part coding problem involving terrain simulation and water physics. The problem sounded manageable at first glance but the water movement rules had enough edge cases to keep things uncomfortable for a while.
  • Given an integer array representing terrain heights, write a function to print an ASCII visualization of the terrain using '+' characters, drawn from top to bottom with the base layer always visible.
  • Extend the terrain problem: implement a function that simulates pouring a given amount of water onto the terrain at a specified column index, then renders the final state using '+' for terrain and 'W' for settled water. Water moves left or right based on effective height comparisons.

“Part one felt like a warmup and mostly was.”

Airbnb coding round, one meaty algorithmic problem about finding valid listing pairs across a date range split. The problem sounds like a search feature edge case but turns out to be a pretty involved intervals/bitmask question under the hood.
  • Given n listings each with a set of available dates, and a requested date range [start, end], find all distinct ordered pairs (A, B) of listings where you can stay at A for a contiguous prefix of the range and then move to B for the rest, with no gaps or overlaps. How do you represent availability efficiently and scan for valid split points?

“I went straight to a sorted set per listing and tried to think through the split point scan linearly.”

Airbnb SWE interview with a classic scheduling DP problem. Not the hardest problem out there but the binary search optimization is the kind of thing that separates a clean solution from a mediocre one.
  • Given a list of jobs each with a start time, end time, and profit value, find the maximum profit you can earn by scheduling non-overlapping jobs. Jobs that share an endpoint are not considered overlapping.

“The core idea clicked pretty fast: sort by end time, then build up a DP where each entry is either skip the current job or take it plus whatever the best non-conflicting prefix gives you.”

Airbnb ML engineer coding screen, one question but it had real depth with two follow-ups that caught me off guard. The base problem looked easy and I almost underestimated it.
  • Parse a URL query string into a dictionary, handling keys with no value, repeated keys, percent-encoded characters, and malformed inputs.

“The base case took maybe five minutes and I felt good about it.”
