Airbnb·Data Scientist·Take-home Assignment

Jun 2026
Airbnb data scientist interview with a meaty take-home style prompt: raw A/B test logs, full pipeline from cleaning to stakeholder communication. Felt like a real work sample more than a quiz, which I actually appreciated.
  • You're given raw log-level data from an A/B test. Clean it in Python, compute the key metrics (conversion rate, lift, p-value), build at least one visualization, and explain what the result means for the business.

“This is the kind of question that sounds manageable until you're staring at messy logs and realize half your events are duplicated or missing timestamps.”

Airbnb·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Airbnb data scientist interview that dropped me into a product-planning scenario where I had to define the full experiment framework before a single line of code gets written. Pretty rigorous, covers a lot of ground in one question.
  • You're in a product planning session before development starts. Walk through the metrics framework, guardrails, experiment design, unit of randomization, sample size calculation, and how you'd monitor the experiment while it's running.

“This is a lot to hold in your head at once and I think I fumbled the ordering.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Hiring Manager Screen

Jun 2026
Airbnb SWE hiring manager round with a heavy focus on core values. The recruiter was pretty upfront about what to prep and even gave a warning about candidates who claim to love travel but can't back it up with specifics.
  • Tell me about a time you were a host or were hosted by someone. What made it memorable?
  • Describe the biggest difficulty you've faced at work, or a task you failed to deliver on.
  • Tell me about an innovative idea you had that could change the world, or at least had significant impact.
  • Walk me through a time you received or delivered difficult feedback.
  • Why Airbnb specifically?

“This one feels soft until you realize it's basically a culture fit litmus test.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Airbnb software engineer coding round, one problem the whole session. The question was harder to implement cleanly than it looks on paper and I spent a lot of time getting the backtracking logic right.
  • Given a multiset of digits and a lower bound integer, return the smallest number you can form by permuting those digits that is still greater than or equal to the lower bound. Return -1 if no valid permutation exists.

“The greedy approach feels obvious once you see it but I fumbled the backtracking part for a while.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
System design round at Airbnb for a software engineer role. The question was a single deep-dive into multi-currency support, which sounds scoped until you realize how many rabbit holes it opens up.
  • How would you design a system to support multi-currency pricing and booking, covering everything from how users select a currency to how conversions, rounding, taxes, and refunds are handled consistently across the product?

“I started with the UX layer and currency defaulting logic, which felt safe, but the interviewer kept pushing on the storage side.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Airbnb coding screen, pretty much a straight Kadane's algorithm question. Nothing surprising, just needed to know your stuff.
  • Given an array of integers, find the contiguous subarray with the largest sum and return that sum.

“Classic problem, linear time solution with constant space.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral round at Airbnb for a SWE role, just one question about travel.
  • Tell me about a trip you've taken.

“Classic Airbnb culture question.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Jun 2026
Airbnb software engineer interview that was basically a full game engine implementation problem. More involved than I expected for a coding round, they really pushed on generalization and complexity analysis.
  • Design and implement a Connect Four game engine with a 6x7 board, supporting drop(col, player), getStatus(), and reset() methods. Gravity must be enforced so discs fall to the lowest empty cell.
  • How do you detect a win efficiently after each move, without scanning the entire board? Aim for O(k) time based only on the last placed disc.
  • How would you handle invalid inputs like an out-of-range column, a full column, or a move from the wrong player?
  • Generalize the game to an MxN board with a configurable connect length k instead of hardcoded values.
  • Discuss the trade-offs between using a 2D array versus bitboards for the board representation. What are the time and space complexity implications?
  • What unit tests would you write for this game engine, including edge cases?

“Spent probably too long setting up the board structure before even touching the API surface.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Airbnb software engineering interview with a grid-based BFS problem. Pretty standard multi-source BFS setup but they threw in a follow-up about 8-directional spread that caught me off guard mid-explanation.
  • Given an m x n grid where cells are either empty (0), healthy (1), or infected (2), find the minimum number of minutes until all healthy cells are infected via 4-directional spread. Return -1 if some healthy cells can never be reached.
  • Extend your solution so that infection spreads in all 8 directions (including diagonals). What changes, and what is the new answer for the same example input?

“Multi-source BFS, start by seeding all the infected cells into the queue at once.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral round at Airbnb for a software engineer role, focused on communication and self-correction under pressure. Pretty introspective question that made me realize I don't have a clean story ready for this kind of thing.
  • Tell me about a time your solution went off track because of a miscommunication with a stakeholder or interviewer. How did you catch it, fix the misunderstanding, and realign? And what do you do now to make sure you're building toward what the other person actually wants?

“This one stung a little because I had a real story for it but I kept second-guessing whether it was the right one to tell.”
