Airbnb·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
ML design round at Airbnb, second round, focused entirely on building a family-friendly listing classifier. Pretty meaty problem with a lot of surface area, and the follow-ups pushed into some genuinely tricky territory around fairness and cold start.
  • Design a machine learning system to classify Airbnb listings as family-friendly so users can filter by that attribute.
  • What happens if hosts deliberately mislabel their listings to show up in the family-friendly filter?
  • How would you make sure the classifier doesn't unfairly filter out listings from certain hosts or neighborhoods?
  • How do you handle cold start for new listings that have no reviews or booking history?

“I framed it as binary classification pretty quickly, which felt right, but I spent too long on label construction before touching features.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Airbnb software engineer interview with a digit rearrangement problem that started simple enough but had a follow-up that really tested whether you'd thought through edge cases. Pretty algorithmic, not much systems stuff.
  • Given a non-negative integer, rearrange its digits to produce the smallest possible number. Leading zeros are permitted in the result.
  • Follow-up: given the same integer and an additional lower bound, find the smallest rearrangement of the digits that is strictly greater than the lower bound, or report that no such rearrangement exists.

“Sorting the digits ascending is the obvious move and I got there fast.”

Airbnb·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Airbnb PM interview with a growth-focused product strategy question. Pretty lean on details but the core prompt was meaty enough to chew on for a while.
  • How would you grow Airbnb's new user base by 3x?

“This is the kind of question that sounds straightforward until you're actually in it.”

Airbnb·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
PM interview at Airbnb, got a product metrics question about a feature on a completely different platform which was a bit of an odd choice but not uncommon for these rounds.
  • How would you measure the success of a search bar on an online learning platform like EdX?

“I blanked for a second because the product wasn't Airbnb at all, which threw me.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Airbnb technical screen where they asked me to build a mini in-memory SQL engine from scratch. Open-ended enough that I spent the first ten minutes just figuring out what to actually build, which probably cost me.
  • Design and implement an in-memory SQL-like database from scratch, supporting CREATE TABLE, INSERT, SELECT with WHERE predicates, DELETE, and UPDATE. You decide what subset of expressions and parsing logic to support.

“The scope thing is what gets you.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Airbnb coding interview that centered on object-oriented design rather than pure algorithms. The main ask was building a Retryer class with a sensible default and room for extension, which sounds straightforward but the OOP angle trips you up if you're not thinking about it ahead of time.
  • Implement a Retryer class with a default retry strategy, and design it so that the behavior can be customized or extended.

“I started coding the default case pretty fast and that was fine, but then they pushed on extensibility and I kind of fumbled.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Airbnb software engineer interview with a classic game design problem that goes deeper than it looks. The coding part is straightforward but the follow-up discussion on scaling and AI is where they actually seem to care.
  • Design and implement a Connect Four game, including the board structure, player move logic, and winner detection. Then walk through time and space complexity, and discuss how you'd extend it to support an AI opponent or a scalable multiplayer service.

“The board and move logic came out fine, grid with a column-stack approach, nothing too tricky.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Airbnb SWE behavioral round, one question about hosting. Pretty short session from what I remember.
  • Tell me about a time you were a good host.

“Very on-brand for Airbnb so I wasn't surprised, but I still fumbled it a bit.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Airbnb coding interview with a tree DP problem that looks deceptively simple until you realize the adjacency constraint forces you to think recursively. Clean problem, but easy to botch the state definition if you're not careful.
  • Given a binary tree where each node holds a non-negative value, find the maximum sum you can collect from nodes such that no two chosen nodes share a parent-child relationship.

“My first instinct was to treat it like a graph coloring problem and I wasted probably three minutes going down that road.”

Airbnb·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Airbnb system design round for a software engineer role, focused on designing a booking system. Pretty standard stuff for this company but still a lot to cover in one session.
  • Design a booking system.

“Classic Airbnb question, probably the most predictable thing they could have asked.”
