Amazon·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Jul 2026
Amazon onsite coding round with a log parsing and aggregation problem. The prompt was intentionally vague on input format, which turned out to be the whole point. Felt like a data engineering question dressed up as an algorithms one.
  • Given a raw log stream, parse and aggregate entries grouped by a key (like user or event type), then return a sorted report. Clarify the input format before coding.
  • Deduplicate log entries by event ID, keeping only the most recent occurrence, then return sorted results.
  • How would you handle this log aggregation problem if the input is too large to fit on a single machine?

“I started coding too fast and had to backtrack when they asked what I'd do with malformed lines.”

Amazon SWE coding round, one problem the whole session. They gave me a linked list deep copy problem but with an extra arbitrary pointer on top of the usual random pointer, which I wasn't expecting.
  • Given the head of a linked list where each node has a next pointer, a random pointer, and an additional extra pointer (each of which can point to any node or null), return a deep copy of the list in O(n) time.

“The classic random pointer version I'd seen before, so my first instinct was to reach for a hashmap mapping old nodes to new ones.”

Amazon·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Jul 2026
Amazon DS interview, got a SQL question about computing monthly cohort retention for a tenant activity dataset. Pretty involved problem with a lot of moving parts, more of a take-home style prompt than a quick whiteboard thing.
  • Given a users table and an activity table, write a SQL query to compute a monthly cohort retention table. Each tenant's cohort is defined by the calendar month of their earliest activity timestamp (not signup date). For each cohort, calculate how many tenants were active in each subsequent month, and output the cohort month, cohort size, month number, retained user count, and retention rate rounded to 4 decimal places.

“The tricky part is that cohort assignment uses the earliest activity_ts, not signup_date.”

Amazon security engineer interview, single technical question about browser-to-server flow. Pretty classic but deceptively deep if they push on the security layers.
  • Walk me through everything that happens, from a security perspective, when you type google.com into a browser and hit enter.

“This sounds like a networking 101 question until you realize they want the security angle specifically.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Online Assessment (OA)

Jul 2026
Amazon SWE online assessment, one coding problem centered on topological sort. Pretty standard graph question but the output format tripped me up a bit.
  • Given n courses and m prerequisite pairs, determine if all courses can be completed. If yes, output a valid ordering; if not, output IMPOSSIBLE.

“Basically Kahn's algorithm with a small twist: you also need to reconstruct the order, not just detect cycles.”

Jul 2026
Amazon BI Engineer interview with a SQL problem centered on streaming data. Pretty straightforward setup but the aggregation logic requires you to think carefully about what 'first watched' actually means per user before you can count anything useful.
  • Given a table of customer movie views with a date column, write a SQL or Python solution to find which movie title appears most often as the first film a user ever watched.

“My first instinct was to just GROUP BY title and COUNT, which is completely wrong.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jul 2026
Amazon behavioral round for a software engineer role. One question, focused on the tension between shipping fast and doing things right. Pretty standard for Amazon but still a lot to unpack in a short answer.
  • Tell me about a time you had to ship something important but had to cut corners or adjust scope to meet a deadline. How did you make that call, and how did you explain the trade-off to others?

“This one tripped me up more than I expected.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Onsite - Multi Round

Went through the loop interview for an SDE I role at Amazon. Felt mostly okay during the session but the DSA portion is where I'm second-guessing myself, and now I'm just waiting to see what happens.
  • Data structures and algorithms problem(s) asked during the loop interview.

“I was pretty vocal throughout, kept checking in with the interviewer to make sure I was going in the right direction.”

Jul 2026
Coding screen for a Software Engineer role at Amazon, focused entirely on Union-Find. Pretty narrow scope but you really need to know the internals cold, not just the concept.
  • Implement Union-Find with path compression and union-by-rank, then apply it to a graph or connectivity problem.

“The core of the whole round.”

Amazon·Product Manager·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jul 2026
PM behavioral round at Amazon, pretty much centered on the classic pivot question. Nothing fancy, just one question that took more out of me than I expected.
  • Describe a project where you realized mid-way that the original strategy or direction needed to change. What did you do?

“I had a decent story ready but fumbled the part about why I was the one who caught it first.”
