Amazon·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Amazon coding round, one question on binary trees. Pretty standard stuff but the recursive constraints made it a bit more interesting than I expected.
  • Given the root of a binary tree and two nodes p and q, find their lowest common ancestor. The LCA is the deepest node that has both p and q as descendants, and a node can be a descendant of itself. Solve it recursively with O(N) time and O(H) space.

“The recursive framing is what makes this one actually worth thinking about.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
Amazon SWE interview with a system design question about building a Tic Tac Toe game that supports remote play. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Design a Tic Tac Toe game that supports remote multiplayer play.

“I jumped straight into the game logic and spent way too long on the board state before they nudged me toward the networking side.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Apr 2026
Amazon SWE coding round, one algorithmic problem about server memory partitioning. The constraint was tight enough that a naive approach would've timed out, so they wanted you to think carefully about efficiency.
  • You have an even number of servers, each with a memory value. Split them into equal-sized primary and backup groups such that every primary is paired with a distinct backup whose memory is at least as large. Maximize the total memory of all primary servers. Your solution needs to run well under O(n^2).

“Took me a minute to see the structure.”

Amazon·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Amazon interview for what seemed like a product strategy role, just one case question about Alexa Guard and how you'd take it to market. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Design a go-to-market strategy for Alexa Guard.

“I started by trying to define who actually buys this thing, renters vs homeowners, people who already have Echo devices vs new customers.”

Amazon·Product Manager·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral round for a PM role at Amazon. Just one question but it had some real teeth to it.
  • Tell me about a time an experiment you ran produced results you didn't expect. What did you do next?

“This is the kind of question where you think you have a good story ready and then halfway through telling it you realize it doesn't actually show what they want.”

Amazon·Product Manager·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
PM behavioral round at Amazon, pretty much centered on Leadership Principles. Just the one question shared but it's the kind that can spiral if you're not prepared.
  • Tell me about a time you used data to change someone's mind or shift the direction of a project.

“This is a classic Amazon LP question and I still fumbled the setup.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral round for a solutions architect role at Amazon. Just one question but it was a heavy one, the kind where you realize halfway through your answer that you're not being specific enough.
  • Describe a situation where a team member was dominating discussions and shutting down input from others. How did you handle it?

“I had a real example for this but I kept dancing around the conflict instead of just saying what I did.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Amazon data science interview with a behavioral question focused on metrics and driving change. Pretty standard loop question but the follow-ups made it trickier than expected.
  • Walk me through a time you used a specific metric to identify a need for change in your department. Did you build the metric yourself or was it pre-existing, and how did it factor into the decision to act?

“The follow-up about whether I created the metric or inherited it is what tripped me up a bit.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Amazon phone screen for SWE, implementation round where they handed me a JSON events pipeline problem and asked me to build a filter-and-routing service from scratch in Java. Time pressure was the real story here, not the design itself.
  • Design and implement a service that receives a continuous stream of JSON events and routes each event to the appropriate output queue based on a set of configurable filter expressions. Only a JSON parser helper is provided.

“The scope of this thing surprised me.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Online Assessment (OA)

Apr 2026
Amazon SWE interview with a sliding window / sorting problem about buying servers that form a valid circular arrangement. Pretty clean problem once you see the trick, but the circular constraint is easy to miss on first read.
  • Given a list of servers each with a computing power value, find the maximum number of servers K a client can purchase such that the servers can be rearranged into a circular network where adjacent servers differ in power by at most 1.

“Sort the array first, that part clicked pretty fast.”
