May 2026
SQL interview for a BI Engineer role at Amazon. One question, pretty focused on joins and aggregation logic across a small e-commerce schema. Nothing wild but you have to get the filtering right or the count is off.
  • Given tables for customers, orders, order items, and items, write a SQL query that returns the count of distinct customers who purchased both a Kindle and an Alexa.

“I went straight for a join across all four tables and then tried to filter in the WHERE clause, which almost immediately broke things because you end up excluding rows you need for the other item.”

Amazon PM interview, behavioral focus with a couple of team-dynamics questions. Nothing too wild but the second question tripped me up more than I expected.
  • What's the best team you've been on, and what's the worst?
  • Describe your ideal team. What mix of skills and experience levels would you want on it?

“I had a decent answer for the best team but fumbled on the worst.”

May 2026
Amazon PM interview with a behavioral question focused on influence and persuasion. Pretty standard loop stuff but the question has some teeth if you're not prepared with a real story.
  • Describe a situation where you persuaded a colleague to adopt your approach. What happened as a result?

“I had a decent story ready but fumbled the outcome part.”

May 2026
Amazon data scientist interview with a meaty end-to-end ML system design question. One question, but it covered basically everything: data pipelines, modeling choices, deployment, the whole stack. Not a casual screen.
  • Walk through every step you'd take to build a regression model that predicts daily energy consumption for utility clients, starting from raw data all the way through to production and ongoing monitoring.

“This one sprawls in a way that's easy to lose the thread on.”

Behavioral round at Amazon for a software engineer role. Just the one question from what I can tell, pretty standard Amazon stuff.
  • Tell me about a time you made a mistake.

“Classic one.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

May 2026
Amazon SWE coding round, one graph/BFS problem about finding the shortest bridge between two islands on a grid. Pretty standard algorithmic interview but the problem has a few layers that can trip you up if you're not careful.
  • Given a 2D grid of 0s (water) and 1s (land), find the minimum number of 0s you need to flip to connect two separate islands.

“My first instinct was pure BFS from every water cell and I wasted probably five minutes going down that path before realizing I needed to find each island first.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Amazon SWE onsite design round where the candidate picked Minesweeper as their game design topic. Covers object-oriented design, flood-fill algorithms, persistence, and multi-device sync. The round doubles as a system design probe so there's more to it than just drawing a Cell class.
  • Design a game of your choice from scratch, covering core rules, object model, and how you'd extend it.
  • How would you implement the flood-fill reveal mechanic when a player clicks an empty cell?
  • What's the correct win condition in Minesweeper, and how do you track it efficiently?
  • How would you handle the case where the player's first click lands on a mine?
  • How would you add persistence so a player can resume a game later, and sync state across multiple devices?
  • Define the API surface for your Minesweeper service: what methods does it expose and what does each return?

“Picked Minesweeper because I could narrate the state machine fast.”

Behavioral round at Amazon for a software engineering role. Just one question but it had a lot of layers to it, and I don't think I gave the cleanest answer.
  • Tell me about a time you failed. Walk me through what happened, what your role was in it, what you did right after, what you changed, and what the outcome looked like.

“This is the question I should've prepped harder for.”

Did a coding round for an MLE role at Amazon. One question, graph-based, similar to the classic Course Schedule problem. Pretty standard for this type of role but still stressful in the moment.
  • Given a set of courses with prerequisites, determine if it's possible to complete all courses (detect a cycle in a directed graph).

“Classic topological sort or cycle detection problem.”

Amazon SWE coding round, one algorithmic question, pretty straightforward if you've seen array traversal problems before. Nothing tricky about the setup, just had to think clearly under pressure.
  • Given an array of numbers, compute the total of all consecutive drops where a value is strictly less than the one before it. Single pass through the array.

“Took me a beat to see what they actually wanted.”
