FAANG / Big Tech

Most of these Amazon write-ups come from Software Engineers (1,092), then Data Scientists (182) and Product Managers (165). The most reported rounds are the technical phone screen (618), the behavioral / leadership round (309), the online assessment (228) and the system design round (159).

Amazon·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Amazon ML engineer loop, heavy on theory. The whole conversation was built around a recommendation system scenario and they just kept pulling the thread on the same topic, which I wasn't totally ready for.
  • How would you approach the cold-start problem in a recommendation system? Walk through content-based features, side information, and hybrid strategies.
  • If a brand-new user with zero interaction history hits your model, what does it actually output?
  • Cold-start defaults tend to amplify popularity bias. How do you handle that, and what exploration strategies would you consider?

“This is where the interview actually lived.”

Amazon·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral loop at Amazon for an ML Engineer role, pretty much one big leadership question that they stretched into multiple dimensions. The ambiguity angle and the stakeholder piece felt like they were probing for principal-level ownership instincts more than pure technical chops.
  • Describe a high-stakes project you led from start to finish. What was unclear at the outset, how did you bring skeptical stakeholders on board, and what concrete results did you produce? Looking back, what would you change about how you ran it?

“This is basically four questions stitched together and they expect you to hit all four.”

Amazon SWE interview, got a database fundamentals question that felt like a warmup but still managed to fumble parts of it.
  • What is the difference between NoSQL and SQL databases?

“Thought I had this cold but halfway through my answer I started second-guessing myself on consistency guarantees and just kind of trailed off.”

SQL question for a BI Engineer role at Amazon, pretty focused on aggregation and filtering logic using a film industry dataset as the scenario.
  • Given a table of actor-director film credits, write a SQL query that returns each actor-director pair who have collaborated at least three times, including a count of their collaborations.

“Pretty standard GROUP BY problem once you see what they're after.”

Amazon ML engineer screen, just the one question about semi-supervised learning. Short and to the point.
  • Can you explain semi-supervised learning?

“Knew the definition fine but stumbled when trying to give a concrete use case on the spot.”

Amazon·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
SQL-heavy technical screen for a Data Scientist role at Amazon. Every question was hands-on MySQL with specific schema and expected output shapes, no fluff, no behavioral stuff at all. Felt more like a database engineer interview than a data science one, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Explain LEFT JOIN, RIGHT JOIN, FULL OUTER JOIN, and CROSS JOIN in terms of set semantics and duplicate handling. Then write each join type across two given tables (emulating FULL OUTER JOIN in MySQL), give exact row counts, list the first three rows in a specified order, and explain how NULLs affect equality joins.
  • For each of five given SELECT queries over a table with GROUP BY, HAVING, and aliases, determine whether the query executes or errors under MySQL's ONLY_FULL_GROUP_BY mode, and if it errors, state the exact reason.
  • Write a single query returning every user with their order count and total spend in dollars (two decimal places), including users with zero orders, sorted by total spend descending then user_id ascending.
  • Using only integer arithmetic (no loops or UDFs), write a SELECT that converts a duration_seconds column into a human-readable string in the format 'X days Y hours Z minutes W seconds'.
  • Using a sessions table with login and logout timestamps, write a query returning session duration as both a TIME value and an integer seconds count using TIMEDIFF and TIME_TO_SEC, excluding rows where logout_at is NULL. Also explain how the query changes if NULL logout_at should be treated as the current time.

“This is where I lost the most time.”

Amazon Applied Scientist interview with a coding question on stack-based simulation. Pretty straightforward problem but the edge cases are where things get dicey.
  • Given an array of integers representing asteroids moving in a row, where sign indicates direction and magnitude indicates size, return the state of the array after all collisions have resolved. Same-direction asteroids never collide; when two meet, the smaller one is destroyed; equal sizes both explode.

“Stack problem once you see it, but I didn't see it right away.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Jun 2026
Amazon SWE coding round, one algorithmic problem about subsequences. Pretty straightforward premise but the even-sum constraint had me second-guessing my approach more than I expected.
  • Given a positive integer array, find the longest subsequence where the sum of all elements is even. Implement a solution and provide relevant test cases.

“My first instinct was to just take the whole array if its sum is already even, which works.”

Amazon·Software Engineer·Online Assessment (OA)

Jun 2026
Got an Amazon SWE online assessment with a server memory optimization problem. Pretty clean algorithmic question once you see the pattern, but the explanation in the problem statement is a bit misleading if you read it too fast.
  • Given an array of server memory capacities (always even length), split the servers into two equal groups where every primary server has at least one backup server with equal or greater memory. Maximize the total memory of the primary group.

“The example in the problem says 3+3=6 which is clearly a typo (should be 3+4=7...”

Amazon SWE interview with a pretty tricky binary search variant. The problem had enough wrinkles to keep me on my toes and I left unsure whether I'd handled all the edge cases cleanly.
  • You have a sorted, increasing array of unknown length. The only access you have is a get(i) call that returns the value at index i, or a sentinel like infinity if i is out of bounds. Given a target value, find its index or return -1. Optimize for time, handle the case where you don't know the upper bound, and return the first occurrence if there are duplicates.

“The unknown length part is what got me initially.”
