Apple·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Stats fundamentals check for a Data Scientist role at Apple. Pretty standard stuff but the multi-part format meant you had to keep your definitions tight and your examples on point, no room to ramble.
  • What is the difference between a p-value and a confidence interval, when would you choose a t-test over a chi-square test, and how would you define Type I and Type II errors with examples?

“Three questions bundled into one and I kind of tripped over myself trying to answer them in order.”

Apple system design round focused entirely on a high-throughput ad click ingestion and analytics platform. One long question, lots of rabbit holes, and I left feeling like I'd covered maybe 60% of what they actually wanted.
  • Design a system that ingests ad click events at very high throughput and exposes aggregated metrics per ad, campaign, and advertiser across multiple time windows (last minute, last hour, last day, all-time). Cover the ingestion pipeline, streaming aggregation with windowed counts, real-time and historical storage, the click event schema, fraud and bot filtering, and how you handle late or out-of-order events.

“This was basically the entire interview.”

Apple SWE interview with a grid pathfinding problem that seemed straightforward until the follow-up added a wrinkle. Pretty standard coding round overall, nothing too wild.
  • Find the shortest path between two points in a grid, where some cells are blocked.
  • Follow-up: how would your approach change if you could convert some blocked cells to unblocked ones?

“Classic BFS setup.”

Apple·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Jun 2026
System design round at Apple for a software engineer role, focused entirely on building a Dropbox-style file sync service. It was a deep, sprawling question and I felt like I was playing catch-up the whole time trying to cover all the moving parts.
  • Design a cloud file sync and sharing service similar to Dropbox, covering upload/download, multi-device sync, conflict resolution, sharing permissions, version history, and deletion.
  • How would you handle bandwidth efficiency and low-latency sync across devices, specifically around chunked uploads and deduplication?
  • Walk me through how the client sync engine works, including how it watches the local filesystem, computes diffs, and applies remote changes.
  • What are the tradeoffs between long-polling and WebSockets for notifying clients of remote file changes?
  • How would you scale this system to support billions of files across millions of users?

“This question has a lot of surface area and I didn't pace myself well.”

Apple·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral round at Apple for a software engineer role, all scenario-based stuff around team dysfunction and project risk. No coding, just a long conversation about how you handle a blocked project when a teammate goes dark.
  • Your team is blocked because a teammate who owns a critical piece of work has gone completely unresponsive. What do you actually do in the first day or two?
  • How do you hold someone accountable for a missed commitment while still leaving room for the possibility that something serious is going on in their personal life?
  • At what point do you escalate, who do you go to, and how do you bring it up without it feeling like you're throwing a colleague under the bus?
  • How do you keep your manager and other stakeholders informed about the project status and the risk you're facing, without causing unnecessary panic?
  • Once the deadline passes, what changes would you push for to make sure this kind of situation doesn't happen again?

“I started talking about Slack messages and standups and the interviewer kind of waited for more.”

Apple SWE interview with a classic LRU cache design question. Pretty standard stuff for this level but the implementation details are where it gets tricky.
  • Design and implement an LRU cache that supports get and put operations in O(1) average time, with eviction of the least recently used entry when capacity is exceeded.

“You need a hash map plus a doubly linked list working together.”

Apple SWE interview with a tree traversal problem. Pretty standard coding round, nothing too wild, but the column-tracking detail is easy to fumble if you haven't seen it before.
  • Given a binary tree, return its vertical order traversal: for each column from leftmost to rightmost, list node values top to bottom as encountered in a level-order traversal.

“The BFS part clicked pretty fast for me, the part I had to think through was how to assign column indices cleanly.”

Apple SWE interview with a system design flavored question about message queues. Short on details but the question itself is worth thinking through.
  • Why would you use a message queue in a system?

“Talked through decoupling producers and consumers, handling traffic spikes, async processing.”

Apple·Software Engineer·Recruiter / HR Screen

Jun 2026
Apple data engineer screen, basically just one question about career direction and fit. Pretty low-key but still felt like they were sizing up whether I actually knew what I wanted.
  • What kind of role are you looking for next, and how does this position fit into where you want to take your career over the next few years?

“I rambled a bit.”

Apple·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Jun 2026
Behavioral round at Apple for a Data Engineer role. Three questions, all pretty standard but the follow-up pressure on the 'difficult problem' one caught me off guard. Left feeling okay about it but not great.
  • What was the most difficult problem you have faced in your work, and how did you approach it?
  • In your current or most recent project, what part did you find the most interesting, and why?
  • What kind of role are you looking for next, and what motivates that choice?

“I picked a pipeline reliability issue I dealt with a while back.”
