AT&T·Software Engineer·Hiring Manager Screen

Aug 2026
Went through an interview that didn't land me the job but wasn't a total loss either. The recruiter followed up informally with prep advice and said they'd consider me for a different role down the line. The sticking point was AI experience, which made me realize I'd undersold what little I actually had.
  • What is your experience working with AI tools in a professional or project context?

“This is where I fumbled.”

Zoom screen with a recruiter who was so polished and professional I genuinely couldn't tell if it went well or not. She threw some technical questions at me that were heavier than I'd prepared for, and I didn't totally stick the landing there. Lots of signals that felt positive but she was just so smooth about everything I kept second-guessing myself.
  • Is the posted compensation range acceptable to you?
  • Technical questions related to the role (more in-depth than expected for a recruiter screen).
  • What is your notice period if you were to receive an offer in the next few weeks?

“She didn't push me to name a number, just asked if the range worked.”

Short interview for what sounds like a sales or account management role. Went in over-prepared with notes, and the interviewer apparently skipped half her questions because I'd already covered the ground. Weirdly flattering but also kind of disorienting when you've rehearsed a whole script.
  • Walk me through a specific situation where you had to handle a challenge at work. What did you do and what was the result?
  • What experience do you have working with CRM tools?

“Came in with this one basically memorized.”

Went through a full in-person interview for a corporate role, felt like it went perfectly, got asked back for a second round, and then got ghosted, rejected, contradicted, and watched the job get reposted two days after the rejection email. A masterclass in corporate dysfunction.
  • Tell me about a time you handled a specific challenging scenario relevant to this role.

“They ran through a bunch of these situational questions and I had a real answer for every single one.”

Applied internally for a technical role on another team, went through two rounds, and watched my match score drop from 90% to somewhere around 5/10 by the end. The feedback kept shifting and piling on new concerns until it felt less like an evaluation and more like a slow rejection with extra steps.
  • How would you approach reviewing and critiquing existing code structure without writing any new code?
  • How do you typically work with teammates, and would you describe yourself as easy to collaborate with?
  • Are you willing to relocate, and how would you handle working from a different location than the team?

“This was the bulk of the second interview.”

Second interview of the day, with the director of IT. My brain was fried and it showed.
  • Why are you applying to this company?

“I had a whole answer prepared.”

Got blindsided by an unscheduled phone call from a recruiter for a job I'd applied to over a month prior, had no context on the role, and ended up fumbling through a full round 1 behavioral interview while sitting at my work desk with Excel open. Two months later, automated rejection.
  • Tell me about a time you organized an event similar to what this role requires.

“I had zero memory of what the job posting even said.”

AT&T·Software Engineer·Onsite - Cross-functional / Panel

Aug 2026
Six months unemployed, finally landed a case study round for an ad sales role, spent a full week prepping, and got absolutely torched by the panel for being chaotic and hard to follow. Brutal doesn't even cover it.
  • Given a struggling client account with technical issues and signs of potential churn, analyze the situation, identify what's going wrong, and present recommendations including upsell opportunities in a maximum of 5 slides.

“I went deep.”

AT&T·Software Engineer·Onsite - Multi Round

Sep 2026
Six rounds over two months for a Director role at a large tech company, including a final onsite where I showed up with a 90-day plan unprompted and nailed every question. Then they just... didn't fill the role. No call, no explanation, just a vague email and then silence.
  • What does your 90-day plan look like for this role?

“I'd actually prepared a one-pager before the onsite without being asked, so when this came up as the very first question I just slid it across the table.”

AT&T·Software Engineer·Executive / Final Round

Sep 2026
Went through multiple rounds for what I thought was a hybrid role paying around 95-100k, only to find out right before the final round that the job posting had been quietly updated to fully in-office and a salary nearly 30k lower than what I told them upfront.
  • Research the company's services and present how you would contribute to the business and align your work to their broader goals.

“I put real time into this.”
