Bitkernel had me doing a low-level bit manipulation problem for a software engineer screen. Not a long round, just one meaty question that required you to actually think through two's complement rather than pattern-match to something familiar.

An 8-bit signed integer using two's complement has exactly three 1-bits and five 0-bits. What is the smallest (most negative) value representable under these constraints?

Bitkernel software engineer interview with a binary search tracing question. Pretty standard algorithmic stuff but the exact comparison counts tripped me up more than I expected.

Given a sorted 10-element array, trace through binary search using floor-based midpoint calculation to find the keys 77, 34, and 99. How many comparisons does each search require, and what is the resulting triple?

Bitkernel had me do a technical phone screen for a software engineer role and the whole thing was basically a deep dive on TCP internals. Not what I expected going in.

During the TCP three-way handshake, which of the following is true: (A) the server enters SYN_SENT after waiting 2MSL on receiving the client's SYN, (B) the server enters SYN_RCVD after receiving the client's ACK, (C) the client can be in ESTABLISHED while the server is still in SYN_RCVD, or (D) if the server never gets the client's final ACK it closes the connection after 2MSL?
If the client's final ACK in the three-way handshake is lost, what does the server actually do? Walk through the retransmission behavior and what eventually happens to that half-open connection.
Why does the active closer wait in TIME_WAIT for 2MSL, and what two specific problems does that timer prevent?
How does a SYN flood attack exploit the SYN_RCVD state, and how do SYN cookies let a server defend against it without storing per-connection state?
In a simultaneous open where both peers send SYN at the same time before either receives the other's SYN, what state path do the endpoints follow?

“I almost picked B because I was rushing and confused which segment triggers SYN_RCVD.”

Did a technical screen for a Software Engineer role at Bitkernel and they hit me with a SQL evaluation order question. Pretty niche for a phone screen but I guess they wanted to see if you actually understand what the database is doing under the hood versus just writing queries that happen to work.

In a standard SQL query that includes FROM, WHERE, GROUP BY, HAVING, SELECT, and ORDER BY clauses, what is the logical order in which the database engine processes those clauses?

“I knew SELECT wasn't first but I second-guessed myself on where HAVING falls relative to GROUP BY.”

Bitkernel had me doing a C language question that looked simple but was basically a gotcha about how assignment works in a loop condition. Short round, felt more like a screening than a full technical interview.

In C, given `int m, n;` and the loop `for (m = 0, n = -1; n = 0; m++, n++) n++;`, how many times does the loop body execute? (Assume standard C where `=` is assignment, not comparison.)

“I almost said infinite loop because I skimmed it too fast and read `n = 0` as `n == 0`.”

In socket-based network programming, which of the following statements is incorrect: (A) socket communication requires at least one pair of sockets, (B) sockets exist in communication domains and can only communicate with sockets in the same domain, (C) there are two socket types: stream and datagram, or (D) stream sockets and datagram sockets can communicate with each other as long as the underlying protocol permits?

Interviewed for a Software Engineer role at Bitkernel. The technical question was a classic tree/forest reconstruction problem that looks straightforward until you actually have to trace through it.

Given a binary tree's inorder traversal (A, B, C, D, E, F, G) and postorder traversal (B, D, C, A, F, G, E), the tree is converted to a forest using the left-child/right-sibling representation. How many trees does the resulting forest contain?

“I reconstructed the original binary tree from the two traversals first, which took a minute.”
