Got a coding question from Booking.com that looked straightforward on the surface. One swap, maximize the number. Took me longer than I'd like to admit to get the logic clean.
  • Given an integer, you're allowed to swap any two of its digits at most once. Return the largest possible number you can form.

“My first instinct was greedy and I think that's the right call, but I fumbled the implementation for a bit.”

PM interview at Booking.com for the payments team. One product strategy question about introducing crypto as a payment method. Not a lot of context given upfront so you kind of have to build the structure yourself.
  • You're the PM for the payments team at Booking.com. How would you go about introducing cryptocurrency as a new payment method?

“I started by scoping the problem before jumping into solutions, which was the right call.”

PM interview at Booking.com, one product design question about the homepage. Pretty open-ended and I spent maybe too long trying to nail down what 'customer lifetime value' even meant in this context before getting to the actual design part.
  • Design an MVP for Booking.com's homepage that improves customer lifetime value.

“I went down a rabbit hole defining CLV before even touching the homepage, which in retrospect ate up a lot of time.”

PM interview at Booking.com with a crisis management scenario. One question, pretty scenario-heavy, and it pushed me to think about stakeholder coordination under time pressure more than pure product sense.
  • You're a PM at a large tech company with a product launch one week away. Legal just flagged over 100 potential issues. How do you handle this?

“My first instinct was to triage the legal issues by severity and I said that out loud, which felt right, but I spent too long on that part and didn't get to the stakeholder communication angle fast enough.”

Booking.com software engineering interview with a coding problem centered on payment reconciliation logic. The problem looked straightforward at first but the edge cases are where it gets interesting.
  • Given a list of bookings (each with an id and an amount due) and a list of payments (each referencing a booking id and a paid amount), compute the total payments per booking and classify each booking as PAID, UNPAID, UNDERPAID, or OVERPAID. Return a mapping from booking id to status.

“My first instinct was to nest loops and I caught myself before writing it out, which felt like a small win.”

Booking.com coding screen, pretty much just the classic group anagrams problem. Nothing too wild but it's the kind of question that feels easy until you're actually writing it out under pressure.
  • Given an array of strings, group all anagrams together and return the groups in any order.

“I knew the sorted-key hashmap approach pretty much immediately, sort each string, use it as a key, bucket the originals under it.”

PM interview at Booking.com, one question about user story writing. Pretty straightforward product process question but it made me realize I don't have a crisp answer for something I do every day.
  • Walk me through how you write effective user stories. What specific practices have worked for you?

“I fumbled this a bit because it sounds easy and then you're mid-answer realizing you're just listing generic stuff.”

Did a technical screen for a software engineer role at Booking.com. Mix of low-level CS fundamentals and higher-level system design questions, which felt a bit scattered but not brutal. Some of it was surprisingly basic.
  • What is the difference between heap and stack memory?
  • How do Protobuf and JSON compare as serialization formats?
  • How does gRPC differ from traditional RPC approaches?
  • In what situations would you use event streaming like Kafka?
  • When should you use a table join in SQL?
  • What does SQL stand for?
  • What does CI/CD stand for?

“Classic CS fundamentals question.”

PM interview at Booking.com with a product sense question about refining a user story for a calendar app. Pretty focused session, just the one scenario but they really dug into it.
  • You're a PM on a calendar app focused on improving error handling. Given the user story 'As a user, I want to see when my changes haven't been synchronized recently so that I know there was a problem,' how would you prepare this for the backlog and what would you change about it?

“I spent the first minute just restating the user story back to them which, in retrospect, was a waste of time.”

Booking.com software engineer interview with a data-matching problem that sounds straightforward but has a few wrinkles worth thinking through ahead of time.
  • You have two unsorted lists, one of bookings and one of payments. Each payment record references a booking by ID. For each booking, figure out whether at least one payment exists for it. What does your output look like and how do you approach it?
  • How would your solution change if a single booking could have multiple payment records associated with it?

“The output format question tripped me up more than the logic itself.”
