FAANG / Big Tech

Most of these ByteDance write-ups come from Software Engineers (194), then Machine Learning Engineers (45) and Data Scientists (17). The most reported rounds are the technical phone screen (227), the system design round (28), the behavioral / leadership round (16) and the onsite coding round (9).

ByteDance·Backend Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Jun 2026
Short Bytedance backend screen, basically just one question about LLM experience and that was it.
  • Which large language models have you worked with?

“Pretty surface-level opener.”

Bytedance SWE interview that threw a curveball on a classic tree problem. Not the worst experience but the follow-up variant is what gets you.
  • Given a binary tree and two nodes p and q, find their lowest common ancestor. Then: what if q might not exist in the tree at all?

“The base LCA problem I had down cold.”

SRE interview at Bytedance, single technical round focused entirely on diagnosing a slow backend service. The question was broad enough that you could go in a lot of directions, which I think is the point.
  • A backend service is responding slowly. Walk through how you would diagnose the issue end-to-end, covering monitoring signals, layer-by-layer bottleneck localization, common root causes, and how you'd verify and fix versus just mitigate.

“This felt manageable at first and then I realized how much ground it actually covers.”

First round at Bytedance for a software engineer role, entirely focused on walking through my past projects with a technically sharp interviewer. No coding, no system design, just a deep dive into what I'd built. Passed and heard back about a week later.
  • Walk me through the projects you've worked on.

“Wasn't expecting the whole round to just be this.”

Bytedance software engineer interview that was basically a resume deep-dive. Be ready to actually defend your past work, not just describe it.
  • Walk me through your resume and past experience, including specific projects you worked on, the technical decisions you made, challenges you faced, trade-offs, results, and what you'd do differently now.

“This sounds easy until you're actually in it.”

Bytedance ML engineer interview that was basically a straight-up linked list coding session. The question was a twist on a classic hard problem and I ran out of time before I could even write tests, which felt bad.
  • Reverse nodes in a linked list in groups of k, but unlike the standard version, any remaining nodes at the end that don't fill a complete group should also be reversed. You also need to define the ListNode structure yourself.

“The base problem I knew, but the variation tripped me up a bit.”

Bytedance SWE interview, second half was a linked list problem. Pretty standard but the k-group constraint adds enough complexity to trip you up if you're not careful.
  • Given a linked list and an integer k, reverse the nodes of the list in groups of k and return the modified list.

“The base reversal is fine but the grouping logic is where things get messy.”

Data modeling round at Bytedance for a Data Engineer role. One hour, two meaty design problems back to back. Felt like a lot to cover in the time given.
  • Design a booking system for concerts and movies. What does the data model look like?
  • Design a data warehouse on AWS, GCP, or Azure. How would users query the data from it?

“I started with entities: events, venues, seats, users, bookings.”

ByteDance·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

Jun 2026
Bytedance coding round for a software engineer role. One algorithm question, pretty standard on the surface but they clearly wanted you to know more than just the brute force approach.
  • Given a string, find the longest substring that is a palindrome. Walk through your approach and explain the time complexity.

“I went with expand-around-center which is O(n^2) and got it working, but they pushed on whether I knew Manacher's algorithm.”

ByteDance·Frontend Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Bytedance frontend round that was heavier on algorithms than I expected. One coding problem, sliding window style, and it went okay but I definitely fumbled some of the edge case handling under pressure.
  • Given two strings, determine whether one string contains any permutation of the other as a contiguous substring.

“I knew the sliding window approach going in, but fumbled the implementation of the match counter.”
