Capital One·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

May 2026
Capital One Applied Researcher interview with a coding round that had a Tetris-style grid placement problem. The environment was rough since no copy-paste was allowed in the IDE, which made writing out all the block shape logic way more painful than it needed to be.
  • Given five predefined block shapes and a sequence of incoming block types, place each block on an m by n grid at the earliest valid position (smallest row, then smallest column) without overlapping. Return the final board state.

“The logic itself isn't that complicated once you break it down.”

Capital One·Software Engineer·Onsite - Coding / Algorithms

May 2026
Capital One coding round for a software engineer role, three parts that each build on the last. Nothing algorithmically brutal, but they're clearly watching how you structure things more than whether you can brute-force a solution.
  • You're given two parallel arrays where each index represents related data. Pick a data structure that packages them together and implement it.
  • Traverse your packaged data structure and filter elements based on a given condition using a few checks.
  • Take the filtered elements from your traversal, apply a small transformation to them, and return the result.

“This is the kind of question where you can shoot yourself in the foot by overthinking it.”

Capital One·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Capital One PM interview with a single product design question about rebuilding the DMV experience. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully ready for.
  • How would you redesign the DMV system?

“I went straight into solutions mode and started rattling off app features before even defining who the users were.”

Capital One·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

May 2026
Capital One ML engineer interview with a system design question centered on bank communication architecture. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • Design a system that handles communication between an application and a bank.

“Broader than it sounds.”

Capital One·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

May 2026
Capital One PM interview centered on a restaurant website builder case. Heavy on monetization math and a build-vs-buy decision with actual numbers to crunch. Felt more like a consulting case than a typical PM screen, which I wasn't fully ready for.
  • Who are the major customer segments for a restaurant website builder, and which segment should the product target first?
  • What monetization model would you propose for this product, and what are the main cost drivers?
  • Given specific onboarding and subscription economics, calculate the per-customer profitability at the end of year one and year two.
  • Should the team integrate with an external reservation provider or build the booking feature in-house? Walk through the cost comparison.
  • What strategic factors are missing from a pure cost comparison of build versus buy?
  • If external integration grows the customer base by 5% and building in-house grows it by 3%, starting from 100,000 customers, which path do you recommend?
  • How would your recommendation change if the vendor charges per booking instead of a flat monthly fee?
  • How would you validate the 5% and 3% customer growth assumptions before committing to a build decision?

“I went with independent restaurants as the primary target since they have the most pain and least technical support.”

Capital One·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Capital One data scientist interview that went deep into experiment design for a small business credit pilot. The whole thing was basically one long case question that kept branching into more sub-questions every time I thought I'd landed somewhere safe.
  • How would you design a rigorous A/B test for a $100 credit pilot targeting new small-business accounts, including randomization unit, stratification, and how to handle day-of-week and regional seasonality?
  • Walk through the sample size calculation for 80% power and alpha of 0.05 to detect a +2 percentage point lift over a 12% baseline activation rate, given a budget of 10,000 treatment accounts over 14 days.
  • Define your ITT and TOT estimands for this experiment, and explain how you'd use pre-verification activity to reduce variance in the analysis.
  • How would you set up guardrail monitoring and kill-switch thresholds for metrics like refund rate and support tickets during the pilot?
  • What's your decision rule for this test, including whether to use a one-sided or two-sided test, how you'd handle multiplicity, and what superiority margin you'd pre-specify?
  • How would you check data quality issues like event lag, duplicate accounts, and bot activity before analyzing the results?
  • How would you measure heterogeneity of treatment effects across industry, region, and spend propensity segments?
  • Given an observed lift of +1.6pp with a 95% CI of [+0.2pp, +3.0pp] and a 12% increase in support tickets, how would you frame your rollout recommendation?

“This is where I spent most of my time and still felt like I left stuff on the table.”

Capital One·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Capital One Data Scientist interview that leaned heavier on business case math than I expected. The core of it was a renewable energy project comparison, basically a payback period calculation with some qualitative reasoning tacked on. Not a coding round at all, which threw me a little.
  • A company is choosing between two renewable energy projects. Solar has a $12.5M upfront cost, no variable cost, and produces 150,000 units for 75% of the year and 50,000 units for the remaining 25%, all sold at $40/unit. The other project is corn bio-power with a $2.5M upfront cost, $30/unit variable cost, constant output, and the same $40/unit price. Calculate the payback period for each project and recommend which one to pursue.

“I went straight to the solar math and fumbled the weighted average production for a second.”

Capital One·Data Scientist·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

May 2026
Behavioral round for a Data Scientist role at Capital One, structured around conflict, technical challenges, and ambiguity. Pretty standard stuff but they push hard on specifics, so vague answers won't cut it.
  • Tell me about a time you had a disagreement with a peer, manager, or stakeholder. How did you handle the conversation and what happened?
  • Describe a significant technical challenge you faced. What did you try, what failed, and what did you ultimately learn from it?
  • Walk me through a project where the requirements or goals were unclear. How did you drive alignment and make decisions without having all the information?

“I structured my answer as situation-action-result and it worked okay, but I fumbled when they asked what I'd do differently.”

Capital One·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Capital One software engineer round focused on a clean OOP design problem. Pretty straightforward on the surface but the details trip you up if you're not careful.
  • Design and implement a Bank class that supports multiple accounts with deposit, withdraw, and transfer operations, each returning true or false based on whether the operation succeeded.

“My first instinct was to just write three methods and call it done, but the 1-indexed account validation kept biting me.”

Capital One·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

May 2026
Tech round for Capital One's data scientist role, centered on a shell script walkthrough. Not what I expected going into a DS interview but apparently this is part of their credit card program hiring process.
  • What type of file is a .sh file and how does the system execute it?
  • Walk through each line of this shell script and explain what it does.

“I knew the basics but fumbled a bit explaining the execution path.”
