Capital One·Software Engineer·Online Assessment (OA)

Apr 2026
Capital One SWE interview with a data structure problem that should've been straightforward but something went sideways with the judge. Left feeling like I had the right idea but couldn't get it to pass.
  • You're given a sequence of two operation types: one that places a wall at a specific index, and another that queries whether any wall exists within a given range. For each range query, output 1 if a wall exists in that range and 0 otherwise, then return all results as a list.

“My logic felt right.”

Capital One·Software Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral round for a software engineer role at Capital One. Just one question but they really sat in it with me, lots of follow-up probing on the specifics.
  • Tell me about a time you had a conflict with a manager or teammate. What was it about, how did you handle the conversation, what did you stand your ground on versus give in to, and what did you take away from it?

“This one has a lot of moving parts and I kind of underestimated that going in.”

Capital One·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Capital One PM interview, came down to one question about email experimentation that felt deceptively simple but had a lot of moving parts once I started talking through it.
  • How would you design and run an A/B test for a product announcement email?

“I jumped straight into open rates and click-through rates and the interviewer kind of just waited.”

Capital One·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Capital One PM interview with a classic estimation question. Nothing too wild but it requires you to actually know the product lineup well enough to pick something defensible.
  • Pick a Capital One product and estimate its monthly revenue per customer.

“I went with the Venture card because I figured I knew it well enough.”

Capital One·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Capital One SWE interview with a coding question that flipped a familiar problem on its head. The twist was subtle but enough to throw me off if you weren't paying attention.
  • Given a sequence of deletions applied to an array, after each deletion report the total number of consecutive segments currently in the array.

“It's basically the inverse of the classic 'longest consecutive segment after insertions' problem, except instead of tracking the longest segment you're counting all of them, and you're removing elements instead of adding.”

Capital One·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
PM interview at Capital One with one product strategy question about virtual card numbers. Short and focused, not much else to go on.
  • What value do virtual card numbers bring to Capital One?

“I went straight to the consumer angle, privacy and fraud protection, and kind of forgot to tie it back to Capital One's business interests until they pushed me.”

Capital One·Software Engineer·Onsite - System Design / Architecture

Apr 2026
System design round at Capital One for a software engineer role, full session spent on designing an online banking application from scratch. Pretty thorough, they pushed on security and consistency more than I expected.
  • Design an online banking application covering account creation, KYC, authentication, deposits, withdrawals, transfers, and currency exchange.
  • Walk through your data model for this system, specifically how you'd represent users, accounts, transactions, and transfers.
  • How would you ensure consistency and correctness for ledger updates, especially when handling retries or duplicate requests?
  • What security measures would you put in place for a banking system like this, from encryption to fraud detection to regulatory compliance?
  • How would you scale this system? Think about account sharding, async processing for things like ACH transfers, and analytics.
  • What are the trade-offs between using a traditional SQL ledger versus an event-sourced ledger for a banking application?
  • For currency exchange, how would you handle FX rate caching and what are the trade-offs between freshness and accuracy?

“This is a massive prompt and I kind of froze for a second trying to figure out where to start.”

Capital One·Product Manager·Recruiter / HR Screen

Apr 2026
Quick Capital One PM screen, basically just one question about FinTech interest. Not much to report.
  • Why are you interested in working in FinTech?

“Pretty standard opener but I fumbled it a bit because I went too broad.”

Capital One·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Capital One software engineer round where they handed me a chunk of code I'd never seen and basically said 'go'. Had to walk through it live, talk about what could break, and how I'd clean it up.
  • You're given an unfamiliar code snippet. Walk through what it does step by step, identify any edge cases or potential bugs, and describe how you would test or refactor it.

“The reading-it-out-loud part was fine but I stumbled when they pushed on edge cases.”

Capital One·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Capital One PM interview with a pricing/segmentation question about discount tiers during customer onboarding. Pretty open-ended, which I wasn't fully prepared for.
  • You're a PM at an e-commerce company. How would you determine what percentage discount to offer different customer segments during onboarding?

“I jumped straight into throwing out numbers, which was a mistake.”
