Capital One·Machine Learning Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Capital One ML Engineer screen with a string pairing problem. Pretty focused session, just the one coding question from what I remember.
  • Given a list of strings and a target string, count how many ordered pairs (i, j) where i is not equal to j satisfy words[i] concatenated with words[j] equaling the target. Order matters, so both directions count if valid.

“My first instinct was brute force, just nested loops, and it works but I knew they'd push back on efficiency.”

Capital One·Machine Learning Engineer·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral round for an ML Engineer role at Capital One. One question, but it had a lot of layers to it and I felt like I was still answering it three minutes in.
  • Tell me about a time a project hit a serious obstacle, like a technical blocker, a teammate leaving, or a scope change. How did you re-plan, what trade-offs did you make, how did you communicate with stakeholders, and how did you still get it across the line?

“This is the kind of question that sounds manageable until you're mid-story and realize you've been talking for two minutes and haven't gotten to the trade-offs yet.”

Capital One·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Capital One data scientist interview with a linear algebra question that felt more like a math exam than anything I expected. Just the one technical problem but it required a full justification, not just an answer.
  • Given a 3x3 symmetric matrix with ones on the diagonal and the same value a on every off-diagonal entry, find the smallest value of a that keeps the matrix positive semidefinite. Show your reasoning using eigenvalues or Sylvester's criterion.

“I knew the setup immediately but fumbled the justification.”

Capital One·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Capital One data scientist interview that was basically a live code review session on a buggy Python cart module. They handed you a repo, told you to run the tests, and then asked you to diagnose, fix, and restructure everything. Pretty thorough for what I expected to be a lighter technical screen.
  • Walk through what this add_item function does on a single call versus across multiple calls, and identify at least three concrete design problems that could cause flaky tests or poor readability.
  • Write a minimal pytest test that reliably exposes the shared mutable default bug for the discounts parameter. No external files, just plain asserts.
  • Refactor add_item to remove global state and mutable defaults. Improve type safety and readability, maybe using dataclasses or typed dicts. Justify your API changes.
  • How would you organize the test suite and fixtures for this module? How do you handle mocking time or randomness to keep tests deterministic?
  • What exact shell commands would you run to set up the environment, pin dependencies for reproducibility, and run tests with coverage both locally and in CI?

“This was the meaty one.”

Capital One·Software Engineer·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Capital One software engineer interview with a calendar/date math problem that seems deceptively simple but has a bunch of edge cases hiding in it. Nothing too wild on the process side, just the one coding problem.
  • Given the moon's state on the first day of a year (cycling through 8 states over 8 days), write a function that returns the moon's state on a given target month and day. Your solution must correctly handle the number of days in each month and leap years.

“The core logic is just counting total days elapsed from Jan 1 and doing modulo 8, but I spent way too long second-guessing whether the start day counted as day 0 or day 1.”

Apr 2026
Capital One data scientist interview that went deep into unit economics for a subscription product. The whole thing was basically one long case broken into parts, and by part (c) I was genuinely second-guessing my algebra.
  • A network service charges $40/month with the first 3 months free. Variable cost is $25/active month, plus a $35 one-time install fee and $20 onboarding cost per customer. For a customer with an average 12-month tenure, calculate the per-customer contribution (revenue minus variable and one-time costs) and determine whether unit economics are positive or negative. Show the formula.
  • If the per-customer contribution is negative, propose two specific quantitative levers (such as adjusting price, reducing free months, or cutting costs) and estimate how much each would need to change to reach a non-negative contribution.
  • Under a revised 21-month contract policy where 10% of customers terminate immediately and pay a $100 penalty while 90% complete the full contract, compute the expected average contribution per customer. Then derive a general formula and use it to find how many customers are needed annually to break even on $1,000,000 in fixed costs.
  • Among price, churn timing, and cost structure, which single variable most affects the breakeven customer count, and why?

“This part felt manageable.”

Capital One·Data Scientist·Onsite - Behavioral / Leadership

Apr 2026
Behavioral loop for a Data Scientist role at Capital One. Four questions, all situational, all expecting you to come in with tight quantified stories. The ethics one was the most uncomfortable to answer in real time.
  • Tell me about a time you applied an advanced technical method (like causal inference, Bayesian modeling, or distributed computing) to solve a high-impact problem. What trade-offs did you consider and what was the measurable outcome?
  • Describe a situation where you had a disagreement with a partner team over timeline versus quality. How did you get alignment without having direct authority over them?
  • Give an example of how you helped unblock a junior teammate or raised the overall bar for your team, like through code review, testing, or documentation practices. How did you track whether it actually worked?
  • Walk me through a gray-area decision involving sensitive data or a questionable use case. How did you weigh the legal, ethical, and reputational risks, and what safeguards did you put in place?

“This is where I spent the most prep time and it still felt shaky in the room.”

Capital One·Product Manager·Onsite - Product Sense / Strategy

Apr 2026
Capital One PM interview with a product roadmap question that had basically zero context baked in. One question, no product specified, just figure it out.
  • How would you build a product roadmap when you have no prior context about the product?

“I stumbled at first because my instinct was to immediately start talking about prioritization frameworks, but without knowing the product that felt hollow.”

Capital One·Data Scientist·Technical Phone Screen

Apr 2026
Capital One data scientist interview with a heavy quant case study built around restaurant/coupon profitability decomposition. The questions were layered and got progressively more involved, covering variance attribution, experiment design, and dashboard thinking all from a single scenario.
  • Given a scenario where profit falls on a mixed day despite more tables and higher average spend, decompose the daily profit change into volume, spend, and mix effects using a stepwise counterfactual approach. Quantify each step's contribution and verify the final difference.
  • Which factor is primarily responsible for the profit loss in the mixed-day scenario, and how do you justify that attribution with numbers?
  • Design an experiment to measure cannibalization and long-term customer value from coupon users. Include your randomization unit, treatments, primary metric, guardrails, and sample size or duration assumptions.
  • Design a diagnostic dashboard with daily KPIs and derived ratios that would catch a profit surprise like this before it compounds.

“This one took me a minute to set up correctly.”

Capital One·Product Manager·Hiring Manager Screen

Apr 2026
Capital One PM interview, got asked a pretty foundational question about how PM, project manager, and scrum master roles differ. Short round, felt more like a screen than a deep dive.
  • How would you explain the differences between a product manager, a project manager, and a scrum master?

“I knew the rough answer but fumbled the delivery a bit.”
