Recruiter screen for a Data Scientist role at CloudTrucks, pretty much all behavioral. A lot of conflict and collaboration questions back to back, which made it feel like they really care about how you work with non-data people more than your actual modeling chops.
  • Why do you want to join CloudTrucks?
  • What non-technical qualities do you most value in coworkers, and why?
  • Tell me about a time you disagreed with a modeler or another engineer. How did you handle it?
  • Describe a disagreement you had with a product manager. What happened?
  • Tell me about a time you had to deliver something under a tight deadline set by your manager.
  • Give an example of a project where you exceeded what was expected of you.
  • What traits do you think define a great engineering team?

Panel interview for a Data Scientist role at CloudTrucks, focused almost entirely on product analytics for their driver platform. It was a pretty dense session covering metric design, SQL, and funnel analysis all in one go, which I was not fully prepared for.
  • Pick a North Star metric for CloudTrucks' driver platform and defend your choice. Then write SQL against a jobs, loads, and drivers schema to compute that metric on a weekly basis.
  • Walk through a funnel analysis for the driver job-booking flow. What stages would you define and how would you measure drop-off at each one?

SQL screen for a Data Scientist role at CloudTrucks, working with logistics tables for a trucking marketplace. The question was meaty enough that I had to think carefully about window functions and a few edge cases I almost missed.
  • Given tables for jobs, loads, and drivers in a trucking marketplace, write a SQL query that: (1) finds the top 5 states by frequency in the loads table, then within those states identifies which has the highest count of distinct completed jobs; (2) calculates the average rate_per_mile per delivered_date for completed jobs, excluding rows where miles is zero; and (3) produces a running cumulative count of completed jobs by delivered_date using a window function.
